Cal football — Wednesday practice

Hey everyone. This is Curtis Pashelka filling in for Jonathan, who is taking some well-deserved time off. I went to practice today and saw the last 10-15 minutes of the scout team scrimmage. The players looked and sounded enthusiastic, but it was clear most of them were eager to get started on their Thanksgiving break. The team won’t practice again until Sunday.

One of the players who stuck around for a bit was tailback Dasarte Yarnway, who went through contact drills and scrimmage for the first time in over three months after he had surgery to repair a ligament on his right big toe. He loved being back on the field, and coach Jeff Tedford said Yarnway carried the ball five or six times in the scrimmage and looked fine.

“Now it’s all about confidence and continuing to master the playbook,” Yarnway said. “I think the future is going to be very bright.”

As a 6-foot, 220-pound tailback with 4.5 speed, Yarnway figures to play a role in Cal’s offense next season. I guess how big his role will be will partly be determined by whether Jahvid Best decides to enter the NFL Draft. What do you think? How do you work Yarnway into the offense when you already have Shane Vereen and possibly Best? Not to mention Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson?

– Tedford said Best is still nursing a sore back and added there’s no timetable for when Best will return to practice. When Best feels 100 percent ready, Tedford he and the coaching staff will take it from there.

– Cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson (sprained ankle) did not practice Tuesday or Wednesday. Tedford said Wednesday that Thompson was feeling better and should be ready to go next week.

– Quarterback Ryan Wertenberger completed a 25-yard touchdown throw to tight end Garry Graffort, who made a nice catch in the end zone, towards the end of the scrimmage. The offense ran the ball fairly well but the defense, overall, kept the passing game in check.

Curtis, is there a roster for the scout team, or, a list of next year’s redshirt freshmen??

  • http://deleted Bears

Awesome that Yarnway is already back practicing.
    Thanks for the update.
    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
    Go Bears!

Don’t forget about sofele! God we are gonna be good next year. Stay healthy bears!

Bad news for Cal state fans. http://www.ocregister.com/sports/mcknight-221410-season-usc.html

    Classy young man.

Mclittle meet Keith Browner, Heisman spoiler/Monster of a LB/Long Arms/Your Worst Nightmare. End of story.

Back to the topic of the post, thanks Curtis! I seriously doubt anyone thinks Best will return. He needs to take advantage of the continued frenzy for his services in the NFL. I’ve said elsewhere that he isn’t going to be an every down back as his weight and fearless style will not allow it in the NFL, but his contribution will come in punting, kickoffs, receiving, in a rounds and outside runs. His advantage is a late round pick, as he won’t be stuck with a crappy, but he’ll be able to contribute with a top tier organization. I’d love to root for him as a Steeler.

As to Vereen, Deboskie and the True Frosh who is yet verbal commit more is better, right Amy? LOL! Whateva! Any notice how Amy was postless for a few days? SC will lose to a very-motivated Zona QB after their confidence builds with a less than 4 point win against the awakening baby bears, and be sent to the Armed Force Bowl! What a joke! Any talking about the biggest fall in PAC-10 from the Horseshoe to the crappiest place of Texas? Enjoy your stay! Oh yeah, you don’t even go to $C games, when they’re playing at Memorial and you haven’t been to a game in 2 years. Fake fan!

    Go BEARS!

Keith Browner? You mean Ross Browner who played for USC?

Now about future recruits go to this link and participate in the discussion about Grant High Schools monster Vili Moala and watch C. Tupou play today for USC. You know him as “Cal did me dirty.”

    Who let the troll out?

  • House

Hmm Cal did me dirty??? Sounds like the kind of player that can handle the academic standards at Cal. Maybe a reason why the bears wern’t that into him.

  • Will

I love how during the academic spotlight for $C, they featured a guy with a 2.9 GPA. Great standards they’ve got there, eh? I’m not expecting many athletes to approach 4.0′s, but 2.9 is the best they’ve got? LOL!

  • Larry

Pete Carroll is such a douche-bag. 21-7 with the game in the bag and he calls for a bomb and another TD with 44 seconds left in the game. He was crying like a baby about the 2 pt conversion Stanfurd went for. What a douche, just like his players and fans, all douche-bags!

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Aren’t you leaving something out of the rant Larry? I thought I saw a timeout called by Ricky. If you call a timeout you suffer the consequences. It’s game on. Still thought pucla played us better than you guys.

  • Will

The call was bad enough, but you can KIND of justify it by saying that RN took the time out when $C was tryign to end the game. I don’t agree with it, but it’s a valid argument. What’s NOT okay was the way the $C players showed their true colors:

“The Trojans (8-3, 5-3 Pac-10) followed Williams’ dramatic score by jumping and yelling on their sideline before moving onto the field in unison. They appeared to be taunting the Bruins (6-6, 3-6), who then came across midfield to challenge them before coaches and officials kept them apart.”

How can $C fans defend that?

  • Will

They can take that hootin’ and hollerin’ to the sidelines of the Ponsietta Bowl. Moren, you should change your name to MorePBsarecoming.

  • Jan K Oski

Will, Let’s not forget the former RB U doesn’t have a RB going over 1,000 yards for the 4th CONSECUTIVE year in the regular season of PAC-10 play nor one who is in the 4 Leaders in the League, while the NEW RB UNIVERSITY might have 2 RB in the top 5 this year! Here’s too depth!

    http://www.cfbstats.com/2009/leader/905/player/split01/category01/sort01.html

Plus, PAC-10 coaches are no longer tolerating Pete playing of his first teamers after the game is long decided. Exposed! Take that #1 douche bag on the West Coast!

Which is worst 2nd fiddle in SD or playing in Forth Worth? Amy?

As I almost predicted the Toejammers had a lackluster win against the pathetic baby bears! Horrible TV rating, while every sane person in America was wisely watching the Furd game. Zona’s Frosh QB will throw 5 TDs against Mays ‘n Co. Mays will be exposed, and he’ll never recover in the draft. Should have left last year? Are you listening McLittle?

    Go BEARS!

Come on Will. You can do better than that although your posts over at the SF Chronicle are beyond hope.

Keep in mind that it was pucla who came off the the sideline and all the way to midfield, looking to start something. Our players actually seemed relatively well restrained at that point.
