The Pac-10 is taking the night off, if you don’t count the ongoing drama at Westwood . . .
THE NATIONAL SCENE
The Big Ten/ACC Challenge got under way and the ACC rallied from an early 0-2 deficit to take a 3-2 series lead. In the marquee game, North Carolina (7-1) got a career-high 22 points from sophomore Ed Davis in an 89-82 win over Michigan State (5-2) in a rematch of last year’s national championship game. The ACC also got wins from Maryland (5-2), which topped Indiana (3-4) 80-68, and Virginia Tech (5-1), which posted a 70-64 win over Iowa (2-5). The Big Ten got victories from Purdue (6-0), which defeated Wake Forest (4-2) 69-58, and Northwestern (6-1), which beat North Carolina State (5-1) 65-53.
Two former East Bay prep stars collided in Boulder, Colo., where Monte Vista HS product Cory Higgins scored 22 points to lead Colorado to a 78-54 win over visiting USF and Berkeley HS grad Dior Lowhorn, who had just six points — his career-low in 67 games with the Dons. Lowhorn shot 1-for-7 from the field and finished without a rebound. Higgins, coming off his own six-point performance, is averaging 20.7 ppg for the season.
