Football: It’s Poinsettia

By Jonathan Okanes
Sunday, December 6th, 2009 at 3:13 pm in Football, Gameday.

As expected, Cal was selected to play in the Poinsettia Bowl today. The Bears opponent is believed to be Utah, although the bowl won’t make the announcement official until 5 p.m. today. The game is at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on Dec. 23.

Much more to come….

So the Emerald Bowl officials passed on Cal to get the almighty Trojans on their game program. Little do they know that the spoiled SC fans will stay away from this game in droves. The players will show up in uniform only. Go to Vegas and put all of your money on Boston College or whomever the opponent.

Actually, Cal may have gotten the better end of the deal. Utah or BYU are worthy and entertaining matchups. And San Diego will have the best weather in the country outside of Miami on Dec. 23.

  2. MoreNCsarecoming Says:

Maybe the Emerald passed on your team in favor of USC because we are the better team? 30-3 made that clear. And way to put a spin on it. I bet if it was Stanford going to the Christmas Red Flower bowl and you were going to the Emerald bowl your spin would be slightly different.

  3. Lady Bear Says:

I’m not surprised the Emerald Bowl chose $C. It is probably because Cal was in the Emerald Bowl last year — these bowl officials like to get a diversity of teams and they don’t want the same teams there year after year.

However, you are right that $C fans won’t show up. Hell, they don’t even show up to the Rose Bowl anymore because “it’s ONLY the Rose Bowl, we go there every year – yawn” and anything less than the BCS National Championship is beneath them. The Rose Bowl will be fortunate to have a Pac-10 representative whose fans actually WANT to be there. The Ducks will represent the Pac-10 well on January 1.

    GO BEARS.

    Hey MoreN,

No spin at all. I thought the Emerald Bowl was a crappy bowl last year when Cal played a bottom scraping ACC team. It was great, though, to have a bowl game in the local area to give some fans who can’t travel a chance to be there live. There’s probably no better stadium setup than to have a few brews at Momo’s and walk across the sidewalk to watch a game.

I am positive the Cal players would rather play in San Diego this year and will be motivated to play a really good team like Utah. And I think Cal fans will travel well to get there, unlike the SC fans. One of my best friends is a Trojan who lives in the Bay Area. He has already told me he won’t go to the game or watch it. I think he is fairly representative of the Trojan nation.

I went to the Emerald Bowl in 2005 to watch a charged up Utah team kick the crap out of Georgia Tech. The Tech players thought the Emerald Bowl was beneath them and didn’t show up to play. That’s what is going to happen to SC. Have fun with your bowl.

I bet moren won’t go to the game.

I agree that the players will probably enjoy going away for the game a bit more. Especially after being local last year.

Who cares, really which bowl it is. Not much difference if you are not in the Rose.
Maybe JT can get to work on next year. Especially after the pathetic display all around yesterday.

  7. MoreNCsarecoming Says:

So let’s settle a question. Who does JT most resemble as a coach?

    1. Bob Toledo at pucla
    2. Jim Lambright at UW
    3. Coach John Robinson – second time coaching USC
    4. Coach Larry Smith at USC
    5. Coach Ted Tollner at USC
    6. Kurt Ferentz

  8. Eric Says:

Tedford resembles Terry Donahue (no guts, prone to blow games against medicore opponents, but good enough to get to bowl games) without the occasional Rose Bowl appearances.

Both bowls stink. The nut bowl matches up a middling ACC team – at least last year it was Miami, which was up and coming. BC is…meh. Our matchup in the Pointsettia Bowl is more interesting – Utah is definitely better than BC and will be motivated to kick the crap out of another BCA conference team. If we don’t motivate hardcore, we’re in for a long night.

After hearing a half a season of “and a child shall lead them,” I think the answer is, nomorencswilleverbecoming, to San Francisco, to play in your most beloved Emerald Bowl. As disappointing as Cal’s season has been, and no doubt it was tremendously disappointing, U$C’s coaching was just as bad this year, and if I were (shudder) a U$C fan, I would a refund of all of the payoffs to shady recruiters and refs. McFumble never should have been the featured back – Petey C is stuck in the Reggie Bush past – it should have been Stefon and/or Bradford. QB handling was almost as bad as Tedford last year. Even if I credit the decision to take this year as a learning experience for Barkley, what happens when there is no more Williams and Havili? Barkely has a gun, but I’m not sure there is much between the ears when the pressure is on. Petey C Wally Pipped Aaron Corp, and his mental state is finished. Plus, it was abusive to never give Mustain, who had real success as a freshman at Arkansas, a chance.

Alas, I do think U$C will turn itself around next year. And Oregon may be a NC caliber team. OSU will always be tough, Arizona is likely to be ok, and UW could become a serious contender if Locker stays. For Cal, I think our ship sailed when Mack Whore Brown serviced the Big-12 coaches to vote against us in 2004. How I was praying someone would return the favor after he almost brain-farted himself out of the NC game.

  9. Larry Says:

So lets settle a question. What’s more annoying?

    1.A turd that won’t flush.
    2.Self proclaimed know-it-all U$C fans
3.Douchey SC fans whose team sucks
4.SC fans who jump off the SC bandwagon.
5.Half filled stadium when Trojans play.
    6.All of the above.

  10. Boaltblue Says:

    Hey MoreNoChampionshionshipsarecoming:

Remember at the beginning of the season you were belittling the Nut Bowl? Well, you just received your just deserts. Make sure that you pick up a free bag of nuts when you enter the stadium so that you can get the full experience.

Are you a USC alumnus or just a wannabe? Answer that question.

  11. Dan Says:

SC fans didn’t even bother to show up Saturday because they knew their “team” wasn’t going to show up. And they were right. The Coliseum was only about half full Saturday. Just shows what front-running, bandwagon riding “fans” they are.

  12. Will Says:

Guys, moren won’t go to the game. Just watch. He’ll be on here posting about the bad officiating once BC puts up 3 TD’s on the vaunted Trojan defense.
