The fourth installment in our weekly series:

BRANDON SMITH

YEAR: Freshman
POSITION: Point guard
HEIGHT: 5-11
HOMETOWN: San Ramon

Your five-man Dream Team, including yourself in the lineup: Me, Dwyane Wade (my favorite player), Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett, and Shaq in his prime.

Age when you first dunked: I was 17. It was at this basketball camp in the summer and guys were egging me on, `C’mon man, you can’t dunk.’ I was like, `God help me.’ I wasn’t sure. I went up and it kind of surprised me. I just walked around like, `Yeah, that’s right.’ It was a real dunk.

How tall you really are, if the doctor measured you barefoot: I’m like 5-10 and 3/4 of a inch.

How many pairs of basketball shoes you own: Not as many as Patrick (Christopher). Probably around 25.

Coolest place you’ve been to play basketball: When I got to play on the court at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. It wasn’t an actual game, but I got to shoot around there for an hour or two. It was cool because there was like the main court, and other hoops that were replicas of what they were back in the day.

Unusual place you’ve never been that you’d love to visit: Rio de Janiero.

As a freshman at Cal, your favorite place around the campus: I like Telegraph. All the little stores and the people walking down the streets, that’s even cooler. There’s such diversity. You meet people here in Berkeley you’ll never find anywhere else.

The weirdest thing you’ve seen in Berkeley: It was a bunch of homeless guys and they had started a band. Right in front of Rasputin’s. They were horrible and they were like, `Hey, give us some money.’ They were yelling at me.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, other than basketball, your sport/event: I’d love to run track, like the 100 or 200 meters.

The sport you refuse to watch: Ice hockey. I don’t understand it and I just feel really dumb watching it.

The actor who plays you in the movie version of your life: Derrick Luke

Actress who plays the lead opposite you: Paula Patton

Best concert you ever saw: Boyz II Men

Least favorite kind of music: Country

Favorite meal your mother cooks: It’s famous, too. Ask coach Montgomery — it’s chicken enchiladas and Spanish rice.

Secret guilty-pleasure food: It’s a little Japanese ice cream called Mochi. It’s ice cream on the inside and dough on the outside. I love it.

Food you will not eat: Anything with Alfredo sauce in it. I had a bad experience with it and now I’m traumatized by it.

Three people in history you’d like to have dinner with: Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus and C.S. Lewis.

The smartest guy on the Cal team: Jamal Boykin

The best athlete: Patrick Christopher

    JF:
Thanks for dropping that other question that was out of place.
…I’ll believe he can dunk when I see it. Okay, I guess he sounds convincing enough. Good job, Brandon.

Brandon sounds like a real solid kid, He’s really going to be a dependable player especially as he gains experience.
