Football: Quick Friday night update

Cal returned to the practice field tonight at a rainy Memorial Stadium. The Bears will also practice Saturday and Sunday, and these practices will be devoted to more of the younger players. Many of the scout team guys will get heavy reps as the coaches get a chance to watch the players they don’t usually see run their stuff during the season.

In the final 10 minutes of practice that I was able to watch, DeAndre Coleman came up with a huge hit on running back Dasarte Yarnway behind the line of scrimmage.

Coach Jeff Tedford said after practice that the team will have some kind of announcement regarding Jahvid Best’s progress on either Sunday or Monday. Tedford said Best has been running and doing conditioning work with the training staff but has yet to do any football activity.

The Bears will take Monday and Tuesday off and then return to the practice field for good on Wednesday, when they will start implementing the game plan for the Poinsettia Bowl.

Just enough time for a quick hitter tonight. I’ll have more tomorrow.
