Football: Martin ready to be a Bear

Just got off the phone with Chris Martin, who sounds very excited to be coming to Cal. He said although he is listed as a defensive end, he has been recruited to play rush linebacker for the Bears. I’ll have a story in tomorrow’s paper and much more on the blog later.

Jonathan Okanes

Jonathan Okanes is in his fourth year covering Cal's football team. Previously, he covered Cal's men's basketball team for four years. He can also be followed on Twitter at twitter.com/OkanesonCal.

Right on! Rushing LB is exactly what Cal needs to get its defense back to winning the turn-over take-away stat.

The 3-4 works well if you have a rushing LB…remember Zack Follett? Without a true rushing LB, the D-line essentially plays one man short because the opposing o-line can put the whole line against the 3. With the rushing LB, it creates opportunities and mis-matches as the o-line tries to adjust.

JO – early to say but you do expect Martin to get time as a freshman?

WOW! Great way to start forgetting about the debacle at UW. Let’s hope this bodes well for the rest of recruiting and LOI day.

    Mr. Martin,

You just secured yourself an outstanding diploma (assuming you will do what Mr. Locker did at Washington) from one of the premier academic institutions, an asset that nobody can take away from you. In addition you will be the beneficiary of the best campus life in the Pac 10 ( according to ESPN): a great balance between urban lifestyle and a quiet suburban style up in the Berkeley hills, where you will be staying (Foothill is the official name); unbelievably moderate weather for much of the year; across the bay from the second most tourist visited city in the nation in San Francisco…etc. Of course you already know all of this, after all you are from Oakland, so good choice.

Wow! I hope this is the beginning of a great recruiting momentum. And, we will be able to see him flying around the field next few years in Berkeley.

Look at his films. He is amazing.

    Go Bears!

    Martin is an awesome talent.
Add him to two or three really good D lineman and the 3-4 could really take off at California.
This recruiting class is shaping up to be Cal’s most talented ever!
Take all Abe’s post and add the brand new SAHPC that new players will all get to enjoy and train in and sky is the limit.
Good times in Cal recruiting are here to stay!
