Basketball: Monday morning rankings

The latest human and computer polls are out. Here are some of the highlights:

– Cal checks in at No. 11 in this morning’s CollegeRPI.com computer rankings. Kansas State (10-1) sits atop the RPI, followed by Duke, Temple, Southern Miss and St. John’s. Say what?  Where are Kansas and Texas?  How about Nos. 20 and 8, respectively.  The rest of the Pac-10:  17. UW; 83. WSU; 84. Arizona; 11o. ASU; 138. USC; 179. Oregon; 188. Stanford; 246. OSU; 251. UCLA. Saint Mary’s is No. 21.

– Cal is No. 14 in the Sagarin ratings. Texas (10-0) is No. 1, followed by Duke, Syracuse, K-State and Purdue. Seems a bit more like it. Kansas is No. 7. Saint Mary’s is again No. 21. The rest of the Pac: 32. UW; 49. ASU; 71. WSU; 101. Arizona; 105. Oregon; 129. USC; 144. Stanford; 182. OSU; 214. UCLA.

– Washington remains the only team ranked in either the AP writers poll or the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. The Huskies are No. 22 in the AP, No. 19 according to the coaches. Unlike the two computer rankings, which don’t at all resemble one another, the two human polls are identical 1-through-11, topped by Kansas, Texas, Kentucky, Purdue and Syracuse.T

– Cal’s strength of schedule is ranked No. 1 nationally by CollegeRPI.com. The Bears opponents have a combined record of 69-24 and that will leap after Tuesday’s matchup at 10-0 Kansas.  The Bears’ only opponent without a winning record is Jacksonville (1-6).

JF: The 69-24 record will “leap” after Cal plays Kansas? You mean, you’ve already predicted we are going to lose? Okay, that’s an entire post in itself. It’s okay for us to squawk, but if you do it, you gotta back it up. You can’t just make a little comment like that and have it go unnoticed. I’m not disagreeing, but you just gotta back up your statement, if you are going to make one (as you have). I have backed up my predictions, to be fair.

The record will “leap” whether Cal wins or loses. Pay attention!

Joey is right…and also why the negative energy? Be a real fan. Go beers!

Sorry, Uh Oh, they are right. I was not making a prediction, just starting that — win or lose — the combined record of Cal’s opponents will dramatically improve after Tuesday’s game at Kansas.

We need to win this game. There is no reason why we can’t. It’ll put us in the top 20 and put the pac10 back on the map. Monty had better tell these guys not to poo their shorts like they did against new Mexico. Go bears!

  6. Bob Says:

“Poo their shorts” is a bit rough Rollon. We were leading most of that game. I thought it was just an injury and illness depleted team playing at mile-high altitude that ran out of gas at the end. Now Syracuse and the first 30 minutes of the Ohio State game may have been pooin, but I think this is a different, healthier, more experienced team than the one in those games. Let’s take this one! Go Bears!

JF: Okay, the game is over now and Cal has lost. But I don’t understand how “Cal’s opponents records could improve” if the Bears had won. If we were at 69-24 before the game, and then Cal won, the total would be 69-25, which is worse.

    Okay, lame point to argue.

But what happened is what we both thought would happen. I’m just surprised it didn’t happen to us sooner. Self made some good adjustments by spreading 4 wide with 1 post, isolating that smaller defender (Theo) and making him either front the post or play behind the post. Either way, we were dead ducks. Aldrich (lack thereof) was a surprise, but they brought in 2nds and 3rds that were better than our Max or MSF – no contest.

Although, Boykin’s gotta get some nice post-season awards from this team, either league-wide or at the team dinner. Very solid game. Where would we be without him? Silently, the most important Bear. Our only post – without whom we are a disaster.
