After that touchdown run, Shane Vereen now already has 72 yards rushing. He needs 98 more to reach 1,000 for the season.
Kendrick Payne’s sack of Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn on the previous possession was the first of his career.
You may have noticed that Syd’Quan Thompson did indeed start at cornerback. Chris Conte started at safety in place of Brett Johnson. Johnson is out there for the second possession.
Cal won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Enjoy the game.
Today’s captains for the final game of the season are quarterback Kevin Riley, left tackle Mike Tepper, defensive end Tyson Alualu, and Thompson.
Former Cal star cornerback Daymeion Hughes paid a visit to Cal’s walkthrough yesterday. Hughes was picked up by the San Diego Chargers a few weeks ago after getting cut by Indianapolis. Chargers won’t be able to attend tonight’s game because San Diego is traveling to Nashville today for Friday’s game at Tennessee.
New Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott is in the house for the game tonight, currently down on the sideline chatting with athletic director Sandy Barbour.
Syd’Quan Thompson is in uniform and warming up on the field. That doesn’t mean he is necessarily able to play, but looks as though he’s at least going to give it a go.
Cal is wearing blue jerseys and blue pants today.
The Poinsettia Bowl may not be the highest-profile bowl game, but I’ll bet no bowl game will have nicer weather this year. It is absolutely gorgeous here today. I’m sitting in the open air press box at Qualcomm Stadium and no jacket is required. There is not a cloud in the sky.
The temperature should drop a bit tonight, but it looks like it will be absolutely ideal conditions for a game.
A little less than 90 minutes until kickoff at this point. Not much going on yet. I’ll be back in a bit with any updates. One thing I’ll obviously be on the lookout for is cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson, to see if he is suited up and warming up. My hunch is he will give it a go, start the game, and see if he can play. If not, he will be replaced without hesitation.
