Basketball: Gutierrez out one more week

Sophomore sixth-man Jorge Gutierrez’s sprained right knee will keep him out of this week’s Pac-10 games at Washington State and Washington, coach Mike Montgomery said this morning on the league’s weekly coaches teleconference with media.

“He’s got to get to where he feels like he can go. He’s about 80 percent,” Montgomery said. “He’s a big part of our team. We hope to have him next week.”

Gutierrez missed both games last weekend against the L.A. schools after aggravating his surgically repaired knee the week before against Stanford.

Bummer. Jorge as 6th man is huge to the Bears. Lets hope Nikola can continue to come in and play great defense. On the plus side, when Jorge comes back, Cal will have two stopper in the rotation.

I look forward to Omoke getting more minutes too. He is really playing great. I like the small lineup we used to take over the USC game the last 6-7 minutes. Not sure why Montgomery didn’t go to this sooner?

Amoke is one of the five (okay, six, but Gutierrez is hurt and a guard) best players on the team, easily. He should be starting games. His rebounding rates are insane when he’s on the floor (he’d be second in the Pac-10 in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage if he had enough minutes to qualify), and he’s hitting near 50% from the floor, too.

Sorry to be off topic, but can we get a poll on how long Lane Kiffin will be at USC? Shouldn’t ‘SC be trying to hire someone who knows how to not break NCAA rules? How many secondary violations did Kiffin rack up in just one year at Tennessee? Come think of it, Lane is perfect for ‘SC. This is going to be interesting.
