Basketball: 20 Questions with Harper Kamp

In our continuing series, today we check in with . . .

Year: Redshirt sophomore
Position: Forward
Height: 6-8
Hometown: Mesa, Ariz.

Your five-man Dream Team, including yourself in the lineup: Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, myself and Tim Duncan. We could do some damage.

Age when you first dunked: It was the summer going into my freshman year in high school. It was not in a game. It was during warmups with my AAU team. It was pretty cool.

How tall you really are, if the doctor measured you barefoot: A solid 6-7, 6-7 1/2.

Coolest place you’ve been to play basketball: I’ll probably go with a venue I like. I love to play at UW and I love the city of Seattle.

Place you’ve never been that you’d love to visit: I’d like to go on a European tour. Italy would be fun. I’d choose Spain first because I’ve got some Spanish heritage in me.

Besides Cal, the Pac-10 school with the best basketball fans: I’ll go with Washington State. They show up early and don’t let up the whole game.

The worst: The Washington State fans are also the nastiest. They’ll pick up any dirt on you they can and they’ll say it out loud.

If you could be an Olympic athlete, other than basketball, your sport/event: Soccer

The sport you refuse to watch: There’s not many. As much as I love to play baseball, I can’t watch it much.

The actor who plays you in the movie version of your life: Jerome (Randle) always tells me I look like Justin Timberlake. I can’t handle that. I’ll take George Clooney.

Actress who plays the lead opposite you: Eva Longoria

Best concert you ever saw: The only concert I’ve ever been to is the Counting Crows at the Greek Theater.

Least favorite kind of music: I’d have to go with pop music — Britney Spears-type stuff.

Best advice you ever got: Be humble and be hungry.

Favorite meal your mother cooks: Spaghetti — no doubt about it.

Food you will not eat: I’ve never tried anything that I haven’t liked and I’ve never seen anything that I haven’t tried. Maybe like cockroaches. I’ll stay away from insects.

Three people in history you’d like to have dinner with: John Wooden, Gandhi and William James — he’s my favorite author.

The smartest guy on the Cal team: Brandon Smith. He seems like a smart kid.

The funniest: D.J Seeley. He’s quiet and he’s not funny to a lot of people but he makes me laugh.

The best athlete: PC.

Jeff, did you ask Harper how his recovery is coming along? I’m hoping he’ll experience the Theo redshift scenario of coming back better than ever next year, but I’m concerned that his problems seem so chronic that it could be a Taylor Harrison situation where he never gets back. I see Harper, if healthy, as being a Luke Walton type who could be the glue of the team next year. Let’s hope for the best.
