Football: King to Cal
By Jonathan Okanes
Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 11:27 am in Football, off-season stuff.
A source has told me that Gabe King is going to Cal. He’s just not saying anything because he wants to wait until Wednesday to make the official announcement. But it’s a done deal. King is coming.
The source also said that Cal is definitely in the mix for Keenan Allen. Some perceive it as a long shot but apparently he’s seriously considering Cal. That being said, Allen hasn’t made his final decision.
Both King and Allen will be at a press conference Wednesday to announce their decisions, along with a few other top prospects across the country.

Wow. That’s awesome. If he wants to keep that a secret, maybe we should. Wouldn’t want to have him say, I WAS going to go to Cal, but decided not to when the people I talked to promised they’d keep my secret and then ended up letting it out.
Anyhow, gotta hand it to Tedford. He’s done a tremendous job recruiting AND keeping the guys on staff who recruit well. He’s also doing a great job on the academic side. He must have a hell of a sales kit put together for the stadium upgrade and athletic center, too. Go Bears!

Great job, Tedford, Lupoi and Co. this is shaping up to be a great class for Cal (one of, if not the, best put together by a Tedford staff, in terms of rankings) espeicall on the defensive side of the ball…
Maybe we’ll get one or two more to level guys this week, keeping my hopes up!
Rollonubears – If Tedford’s sales kit for the stadium renovation and SAHPC looks anything like the miniature model in the Haas club, its a pretty nice summary of the project.
Looking forward to Wednesday! Go Bears!!!

I posted this same thought elsewhere, but I think that if Allen chooses to come to Cal along with his brother, QB transfer Zach Maynard, then Maynard may have a realistic chance of starting at Cal after sitting out the obligatory year. Maynard started this year, and put up numbers very similar to Riley this year. Assuming Tedford plays Riley based on experience next year, in 2011 Maynard would still be the most experienced QB on the team, putting him in a realistic position to compete for the starting job.

Great news on King, if true. We have recruited very well on defense this year and could potentially have quite a pass rush in a few years. Nice work, Bears!

J.O. just curious about your thinking in regards to reporting this and at the same time writing that King wants to announce on Wednesday?
Were you conflicted at all? Don’t know the ropes here.

I know this is a bball link, but $C bball is hilarious right now. Gotta wonder if $C football will be this silly, if the NCAA comes down hard on it.

ESPN said J.R. Ferguson a 4-star DL has Cal in the mix. Who knows how serious but you can’t have too many big DL and LBs.

Shaping up to be a great class. The Bears are like The Jefferson’s…movin’ on up.
Will be nice to have several impact players coming in at once.

I’m sure that you guys have already thought of this, but this is probably the best defensive class the Bears have put together with Tedford. And then the potential to add Ferguson and Allen…

Another national top ranked recruit signs on with Cal. Gabe King, we love it! It’s going to be a very sweet day to be a Bear Wed. How many more big time guys will join him, can’t wait to see. Maynard is the kind of QB that can do so many different things for an offense. Put him at QB to run the wildcat would be deadly because of his ability to throw the ball. These guys are going to be able to do something very special together the next 3-5 years. Rose Bowl here we come!

Now they are saying Allen is not going to Alabama and 4 of 5 rivals.com analysts predict he will sign with the Bears. How huge would that be??????

Bend don’t break defenses aren’t suited for aggressive defensive players. Howlong before they transfer out?

Did that King guy play this year? I was looking for his stats.

MNC you will have to agree that this class of recruits is the best under JT. Looks like USC is losing it’s stranglehold on 4 & 5 star recruits. It’s only a matter of time before USC is on a even keel with the rest of the PAC-10. BTW have you seen BYU’s class? Some are calling it the best in the country. It doesn’t look good for your TCU!

JO or anyone else, what time will this press conference JO mentioned in his article in today’s paper is going to be happening? I hope saying in an article in the paper, not just on the blog, that King is going to Cal when King himself hasn’t said anything isn’t going to be the recruiting equivalent of “Dewey Defeats Truman.” That said, if it’s true, and if Allen comes too, what a coup. I’m crossing my fingers. Go Bears!
