Basketball: Pac-10 nightmare or the impossible dream? All 10 teams finish 9-9!

By Jeff Faraudo
Saturday, February 6th, 2010 at 3:36 am in Basketball, NCAA Tournament.

Yes, it is possible.

Likely, no.

Easy, no.

Realistic, no.

Would it require a few surprises? Heck, does anything constitute a surprise in this Pac-10 this season?

Yes, it’s mathematically possible that this craziest of Pac-10 seasons could wind up with all 10 teams tied for first — and last — at 9-9.

Getting there actually doesn’t require too much imagination. I’ve projected the home team to win 34 of the final 41 Pac-10 games.

There are a few upsets:
   — Washington finally wins a road game — at WSU
   — Oregon wins at Arizona and UCLA
   — Oregon State wins at ASU
   — WSU wins at Cal

But I ask you: Is that any crazier than what we’ve seen so far?

And for once, there’d be absolutely no debate: The Pac-10 tournament would be paramount. Winner to the NCAA Tournament, everyone else need not apply.

All that said, we’d be nuts to believe this scenario will play out.

But just for fun, here’s how it could happen:

If all teams finished at 9-9 we would be the biggest dissapointment, the biggest choker – although we already won that title. Next year we won’t be considered seriously.

  • southseasbear

Steve, regardless of our performance this season, next year’s team will be so young and inexperienced that it will not be considered seriously.

  • ondal

    hilarious. kill me now!

  • ocbears

JF, I want to give you props for not only the great entry (showing how much “parity” the league has this season) but also for posting at 3:30am. That’s dedication!

  • SteveNTexas

Exactly SE Bear. This was the year we were suppose to win. We won’t be considered seriously next year because we won’t be a serious contender. This was our opportunity.

SteveNTexas – it’s just one negative post after the next. It’s clear we aren’t better than other teams in the conference, so stop demanding that we win the title because magazines said we would. Just enjoy Cal hoops for what it is – a team that overachieved last year and is having trouble repeating that success.

We didn’t ‘choke’ just because the media said we were the best team before the season. Anyone with basketball knowledge was aware that Washington and ASU would present challenges.

I want Cal to win the Pac 10 title as much as anyone, and sure it’s been a frustrating season – like many before. But your constant rips on 18-20 year olds who are trying as hard as they can to win adds nothing to the conversation here.

I’m not saying we can’t analyze shortcomings or weaknesses, but your comments take things to a new level of negativity nearly on par with the pathetic troll from USC.

I know it would do nothing good for the PACs reputation, but man, wouldn’t that be wild?……GO CATS!!!
