Basketball: The Pac-10 plot thickens

AROUND THE PAC-10

After Cal’s 80-64 loss at Oregon State, just 1 1/2 games separate the top five . . .

– Stanford 72, Oregon 65: The Cardinal (12-14, 6-8) finally gets its first road win of the season (after 10 defeats),  led by 21 points from Landry Fields and 18 from Jeremy Green.  The last-place Ducks (12-13, 4-9)  got 19 points and eight rebounds from Jeremy Jacobs. Senior Tajuan Porter struggled again, shooting 1-for-7  and scoring three points.

– USC 67, Washington 64: The Trojans (16-9, 8-5) completed a season sweep of UW and moved into a tie for second with idle Arizona State,  as Dwight Lewis scored 22 points and Nikola Vucevic had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Quincy Pondexter had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (17-9, 7-7), but Isaiah Thomas scored just five points. UW lost for just the second time in 18 home games.

– UCLA 71, Washington State 51: Michael Roll scored 15 points and Nikola Dragovic and Tyler Honeycut each had 14 points for the Bruins (12-13, 7-6).  The Cougars (15-11, 5-9), who dropped their third straight game,  shot just 36 percent, and were 3-for-19 from the 3-PT line. Klay Thompson shot 2-for-9 and scored just eight points.

– Pac-10 standings: Cal 9-5, Arizona State 8-5, USC 8-5, Arizona 7-6, UCLA 7-6, Washington 7-7, Oregon State 6-7, Stanford 6-8, Washington State 5-9, Oregon 4-9.

LOCAL HEROES

Omar Samhan (Danville-San Ramon Valley HS) had 11 points and 11 rebounds, helping Saint Mary’s snap a two-game losing streak with a 61-49 win at San Diego . . . Brian Stafford (Walnut Creek-Las Lomas HS) scored 22 points in Denver’s 62-57 win over Arkansas-Little Rock.
