Football: Bears hire Pendergast
By Jonathan Okanes
Friday, February 19th, 2010 at 10:56 am in Football, off-season stuff.
The National Football Post is reporting that Cal has hired Raiders assistant coach Clancy Pendergast as its new defensive coordinator. Cal has yet to confirm the report.
Pendergast was hired by the Raiders just last week. He spent last season as the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive coordinator and held the same position for the Arizona Cardinals for five years directly before that. He also served stints as a position coach for Houston, Dallas and Cleveland.
Pendergast began his coaching career in the college ranks as an assistant at Mississippi State, USC and Oklahoma. He hails originally from Phoenix.
I’ll be monitoring the situation and provide an update if and when this report is confirmed.

JO,
Thanks for the post, I look forward to hearing more about Clancy in the near future (more than what was on his Wiki bio)

Per USA Today:
“Pendergast broke into the NFL as a quality control assistant with the Houston Oilers in 1995. His best defense was the 2005 edition in Arizona that ranked eighth overall, however his units have often struggled to keep points off the board. — Nate Davis”
Bend-but-don’t-break redux?

If im not mistaken didnt AZ head coach fire him because he wanted to run the 3-4

locamotion – not sure if that is correct or not, but he also tried to implement the 3-4 at KC, which he was let go from after one year…
At least we know he is on the same page as us with the 3-4…

He sounds like a songwriter. In that case he won’t need to know the lyrics of “We Are the Champions.”

Perhaps SC’s new fight song will be “We are the Cheaters”?

He’s definitely a 3-4 guy which is good for us. And he has a strong NFL pedigree which is good for future recruits. My only concern is that his defenses have never been that good…
That being said, I welcome him to the community and wish him all the best! Go bears!

I think last year Cal hired an ex-NFL offensive line coach. Hmmmmmmmm!

This is his fourth job in two years. Um…. I don’t know about that, but, time will tell if he is a good coach. More or less, I hope he is.
Go Bears!

My former USC contact said he never heard of him.
