I’m becoming a real reactionary type. Because again after reading this I’m getting all the “oh boy we’re doomed” feelings. I know we’re not doomed. But this hire doesn’t make me feel good. It doesn’t make me feel bad either, it just seems lackluster. I’m a Raiders fan too, so it’s not like I’m one of those people who gets off on assuming everything about the Raiders is a fiasco.
I’m sure this Pendergast guy will do well. I just would feel more confident eating my lunch had I seen a name of someone who just came over from a big time school.
If the new guy is more aggressive than the old guy then this hire is an upgrade. I am sick and tired of seeing the three-man rush every passing down! And how many freshman QBs did the D face this year that went for big yardage? Do we remember the Poinsettia? My point is that against young, inexperienced QBs you want to rattle them early, if you can, and make them beat you with a good throw. Watch the Poinsettia first half and tell me where the six, seven and eight man blitzes were against the true freshman QB? I also can’t think of a single corner blitz that we ran all year. I am glad that a new DC was hired and I trust that Tedford made a good choice.
I’m an old-blue, diehard alumni that has endured decades of disappointment, but, still love my Bears.
You say you ‘would feel more confident……had I seen a name of someone who just came over from a big time school.’ Would you expect a DC to leave a ‘big time’ school to come here?
This feels like a knee-jerk decision from someone on the rebound.
I’m seeking positive reinforcement.
I guess we wait and see.
Calduke I’m not sure if you’re attacking me with your comment, but believe me I love Cal and have all my life. I was on campus today in fact. I respect that you’re an old blue. I’m an alumni – maybe not an old blue – but someone that was raised loving Cal and went there and I think this hire stinks.
Anyways, when I said if it was someone from a big time program, I didn’t mean a D coordinator from a big program. I meant an up and coming linebackers coach, or d line coach, from an Oklahoma or Texas, etc. Not a secondary coach who left the Chiefs for the Raiders. This hiring was too quick for a guy that doesn’t have that immediate wow factor. When I read Gregory was leaving I figured, unless it’s a big catch they can make, Lupoi is going to get the job. I agree with your comment about the worry around how Lupoi may feel. If I were in his shoes I’d feel horrible.
Juancho, how is zero coordinator experience better than a guy who has been to the Super Bowl? Give me a break! I’m skeptical that Pendergast is no different from Gregory’s bend ‘n break, but we shall see. I find this mentality of writing guys off before there’s any work at a particular level to be utter foolishness and short sideness. Perhaps, Pendergast will excel at this level?
Jan K, I worry about whether this guy will 1. Be worth the risk of the hire since his recent history has seen him bounce around a lot. 2. I worry about whether he’s an NFL coach and will struggle to adapt to the college coaching environment since he’s been gone from the college ranks for a while.
That being said, this hire tells me that they are bringing this guy in to keep the seat warm for Lupoi who will probably inherit it in two years.
I don’t think anyone “wrote him off” I just think some people are voicing their opinions. Which are just that – their opinions. I think we’re all supposed to get one. It seems like you always find a way to call someone foolish when they voice their opinion. Get over it. Haven’t you seen those TV ads about internet bullying?
