Basketball: Cal signee Franklin scores 20

Cal recruit Gary Franklin Jr. hit six 3-point baskets and scored 20 points, helping top-seeded Mater Dei HS of Santa Ana to a 103-77 win over Long Beach Jordan in second-round play Friday night in the CIF Southern Section 1AA playoffs. The Monarchs (25-1) play Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Price HS of Los Angeles, featuring Cal signees Allen Crabbe and Richard Solomon, won their second-round 4AA game, routing Banning 87-37.

I’m really excited about this incoming class. These guys are going to be stars. I’m real impressed with Crabbe especially. But this class will be huge for the program. I haven’t felt this good about a class in a while – probably since the big Kately, Powe, Ubaka class. Montgomery is doing a great job with the program. I’m glad he’s wearing blue suits now too. My yelling in the crowd “put on a damn blue suit” must have finally got to him.

Great news for the future Bears.

    Go Bears!

I looked him up and he is the #45 ranked recruit. Not bad UCLA has somewhat better recruits and several schools got similar ratings.

    I hope he pans out.

  • uh oh.

Sleuthing at the CIF website shows that Mater Dei (with 2 other Pac10 stud recruits) plays Tues the 24th, then Thurs the 26th, then the CIF Southern Section (SS) Championship 1 week later (Thur/Fri/or Sat – March 4/5/or 6).

If they win the Div 1AA SS, or get an at large(?), they would advance to the Southern California Regional (SCR), which is comprised of the following sections: Southern Section, L.A. Section, San Diego Section, Central Section.

Same scenario for Price High School, with Cal recruits Allen Crabbe and Richard Solomon, which plays in the Div 4AA SS. They play this Tue, then Friday the 26th, then the CIF Southern Section (SS) Championship 1 week later (Thur/Fri/or Sat – March 4/5/or 6).

Next step for both teams, if they make it past SS into the SCR:

It appears that the SCR playoffs will be
Tue, March 8 (at host school)
Thur, March 11 (at host school)
Sat, March 13 (at host school)
Sat, March 20 (SCR CHAMPIONSHIP at USC Galen Center)

The Northern California Regional will also be Sat March 20th at Arco in Sacramento.

Finally, it appears that ALL State Championship games, pitting Northern California Regional Champs vs. the Southern California Regional Champs will be played at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield featuring 10 games (5 school size divisions x 2 genders = 10) over 2 days. Div 4 (Price boys) would play Fri, March 26th at 1:30pm. Div 1 (Mater Dei boys) would play Sat, March 27th at 8pm. IF they make it that far.

The Div 1&2 State Finals for both boys and girls, are slated to be televised live – I imagine by Fox Sport Network.

    see http://www.cifstate.org for more details.

I researched all this to know if our Golden Recruits might be making it to Arco for the state finals, but it appears they’ve changed to Bakersfield. When? Why? Venue $ contract? Central (unbiased) geographic location?

At any rate, my point is that it looks like anyone wanting to see our boys is going to have to do some driving!
