FINAL SCORE: Cal 90, Oregon 74. Cal will play UCLA Friday at 6:18 p.m.
3:54 2nd H: Cal leads 84-63. Not much more to say on this one. For now, anyway.
6:47 2nd H: Monty breaks into a brief laugh on the bench. A sure sign this is over.
7:59 2nd H: Someone thinks the game is over. Brandon Smith has come on and just fed Nikola Knezevic for a 3-pointer.
9:50 2nd H: Kent just called timeout, and this one may be close to over. Cal leads 73-53 after a jumper and 3-pointer by Christopher and a nice put-back basket by Boykin, who has 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting. Christopher has 21 and Randle is still at 22 — 10 shy of Sean Lampley’s career record of 1,776 points.
11:45 2nd H: Cal leads 66-53. Randle is on the bench, getting his first break all afternoon. Porter now has 19 points for the Ducks, nine of them already this half. With his second 3-pointer, in the first half, he broke Salim Stoudamire’s Pac-10 career record. He now has 344 — two more than the former Arizona star.
15:31 2nd H: Cal leads 60-46, and it was 60-42 just a minute ago after a steal and dunk by Amoke. Cal began the half with a clear mandate to attack the basket and Boykin responded with seven quick points. The Bears’ inability to completely stifle Oregon defensive keeps this up for grabs, but there is no sense Oregon is ready to mount a serious comeback. Cal simply seems able to score whenever it needs to.
HALFTIME SCORE: Cal 47, Oregon 34. And Mike Montgomery won’t be thrilled about it because the Bears weren’t real good defensively and allowed Oregon 14 offensive rebounds. But you can’t shoot much better than 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from the 3-point, 55.2 percent overall. Randle had 22 points and is 8-for-8 from the field. The Ducks converted just 28.2 percent (11-for-39) from the field, but attempted 10 more shots than the Bears.
3:39 1st H: It’s 46-31. Cal isn’t playing much defense, but the Ducks are playing none. Cal is shooting 9-for-10 from the 3-point arc — that’s 90 percent and it’s ridiculous. But it’s possible because most of them have been uncontested. Randle has 22 points, his last two coming on a spinning, turnaround shot over Porter. Max has two blocks — now three. This is amusing, but Cal will need to play better defensively on Friday. It’s almost mathematically impossible to shoot better than this.
5:20 1st H: Cal leads 41-31. Randle has 20 points and is 7-for-7 from the field, including 4-for-4 from the 3PT. The last one was very deep. Very. Cal is shooting 66.7 percent from the field and is 8-for-9 from the 3-PT, but only leads by 10 because they cannot control the defensive boards. Oregon has nine offensive rebounds and has taken 31 shots — 10 more than Cal. Max is back in for MSF, who picked up his second foul. Boykin has been on the bench since 14:20 after picking up his second foul.
7:59 1st H: Cal leads 32-24. The Bears are shooting 66.7 percent from the field, including 7-for-8 from the 3-point line. Zhang played two-plus minutes and drew two fouls and the ire of his coach, who pulled him for Sanders-Frison. Christopher got a very brief rest, but is going back in.
11:19 1st H: Porter hit a 3-pointer and Longmire scored on a putback and Oregon has crept within 23-17. Gutierrez is going in for the Bears. Guess he’s OK. Cal is shooting 75 percent (9-for-12) from the field, and still is perfect from 3-point. Oregon is at 35 percent (7-for-20), but has six offensive rebounds.
13:57 1st H: Kent has called another timeout to gently suggest his guys might want to defend the perimeter. Cal is 5-for-5 from 3-point and leads 21-9. Christopher has hit the past two, with no one in an Oregon uniform anywhere near.
15:13 1st H: First media timeout (trust me, I didn’t call it) and Cal leads 15-9 after a 3-pointer by Randle, who already has 10 points. Cal is shooting 6-for-8, including 3-for-3 from 3-point distance. Oregon is 4-for-10.
16:28 1st H: Ernie Kent has called timeout. Cal leads 12-7 after a 3-pointer by Robertson. Randle hit a loooong 3-pointer with 18:29 left, then stole a pass, drove to the basket, put the ball behind his back and made a reverse layup. All in a span of about six seconds.
STARTING LINEUPS: Cal will start its usual five — Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher, Theo Robertson, Omondi Amoke and Jamal Boykin. Oregon will go with Malcolm Armstead, Tajuan Porter, LeKendric Longmire, E.J. Singler and Jeremy Jacob.
A JORGE SIGHTING: The Bears are on the floor warming up after UCLA’s win over Arizona, and Jorge Gutierrez is dressed and running layup drills five days after spraining his left ankle at Stanford. Max Zhang, who hasn’t played for two weeks because of a collapsed lung, also is warming up. We’ll see what it all means.
DIDN’T YOU USED TO BE: Courtside at Staples . . . Jerry Tarkanian, Eddie Sutton (sitting together) and Bill Frieder.
GREETINGS: Hello all. I’m here at the Staples Center, where I’m not sure we can reasonably expect to see anything resembling the game the Lakers play here.
Oh well. Should be fun anyway.
Cal’s game is about two hours from now, but I’m watching UCLA and Arizona, which is a fairly spirited contest. Currently: UCLA 33, UA 28 with 3:10 left in the first half. (All the games, by the way, are being shown in the Bay Area on CSNBA).
No word yet on whether Jorge Gutierrez will play today against Oregon.
I’ll check back in when there’s something to report.

Lucky you, sitting courtside.
I’m thinking that CAL, as the #1 seed, should be getting more rest than the #4/#5 winner of UCLA/AU. Therefore, Cal should be playing at noon, and UCLA/AU at 2:30.
It’s a bit of a rip off.
Oh, you say they have an advantage today b/c Oregon went late last night? And it would be TOO severe to have OU/WSU play 14 hrs after last night’s game? Then don’t start last night’s game at 7:30. Oh, money – shoot, there was nobody at Staples for last night’s game anyways…
Cal needs all the rest it can get for tomorrow, as we don’t have a lot of subs.
#2 seed complained to get that game time moved. #1 seed should have done the same.
Little things, but UCLA-AU winner gets 2.5 hrs more rest to prepare for tomorrow.

Can they call any more fouls? This could be a game of depth.

Did I see the box score right and see Robert Thurman come in? Did he just burn his redshirt for just one foul?
March 11th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
I’m looking at yahoo’s game channel and listening to the radio…no online video from what I can tell. I don’t see Thurman in the BS.
Hey so ‘Rome is on fire. Dude is POY.

Lol, that’s a mistake. I think it’s supposed to be Knezevic. Haven’t seen Thurman and don’t think he could play even if he wanted since he’s a transfer.

I wish I was watching Randle DESTROY Oregon instead of being stuck in a crappy meeting. Go Bears!!!

This game is televised in Texas! Cal looks great its 84-66 and its mostly subs playing.
Randle seems to have gained confidence after being named POY. Christopher has jelled too.
Just what we need going into the NCAA’s UCLA had to fight to win, we are more rested.. and much better.

Cal playing like the Pac-10 champ, and Jerome Randle playing like the Player of the Year. And very nice to see both Zhang and Gutierrez playing. Go Bears!
