A sampling of what was said at Cal’s Pro Day yesterday:
RUNNING BACK JAHVID BEST:
On not participating in drills and tests
On I came here expecting to do position drills, but there’s only one running back coach here and he said he saw everything at the combine. I didn’t need to do anything more.
I weighed in again. 200 even. I got one pound. That’s crucial. At the combine, I wanted it to start with a 2 so bad.
On gaining weight
I changed my diet completely. Well when I was at Cal there was a lot of fast food in my diet. That’s definitely out of the picture. Just eating the right foods is the biggest thing.
I had a nutritionist when I was training for the combine. Now I’m by myself so I’m just remembering everything she said.
On how he checked out medically at the combine
So far, my impression I did well. All the questions they had for me, I answered them all. It’s all good news. We’ll see how it all unravels here in a couple weeks. But as far as I’m concerned, everything is good.
On whether he eased injury concerns for NFL teams
Going into the Combine, a lot of teams felt like I still had a concussion. They didn’t know I had recovered from it. That was good news. Everything else checked out fine. It was a good Combine for me.
It was big, just showing that I’m back healthy and I’m back in shape and that I can do everything that I was doing before.
On running the best 40-yard dash among running backs at the combine
It was good. The time I ran was good, but I could have run faster. The combine is just a long process. They don’t give you sleep out there.
On training for the 40 at a high performance facility in Florida
We were only working on 10s and 20s. I expected to run a low 4.3 or maybe a 4.2. That’s what I was on pace for with my 20s, but I still felt like I had a good combine.
On whether the Raiders interviewed him at the combine
They did interview me. I think I showed them Raider speed. We’ll see how that goes. I met with 17 teams and it was all good.
On other individual workouts he has set up
The 19th with the Browns and the 29th with the Redskins
On where he expects to be drafted
As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter where I go. I know once I get on a team, I’m going to go out there and be productive. As far as where I get drafted, it really doesn’t matter to me. As long as I can get on a team, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to do that.
DEFENSIVE END TYSON ALUALU:
On his experience at the combine
The combine was pretty crazy. It was a great experience for me. I thought it went well.
On what he needed to improve on after the combine
There were a lot of questions after my bench. I hit 21. I hit 24 here. It’s something that I need improvement on.
On his speed
A lot of teams assumed I was running 4.9 or 5-flat, but I had a 4.87. It turned out pretty good for me.
On why he didn’t do much at Pro Day
I wanted to be with my teammates and do what they are doing, but coaches and agents told me not to.
I was planning on doing drills, but some coaches came up to me and said they had seen everything at the combine. They thought I performed well as far as movement and athleticism and they had watched a lot of film. They said they didn’t have to see me do drills.
On where he expects to be drafted
It’s always been a dream of mine. I just want to get that opportunity just to play in the NFL and to just live my dream. It doesn’t’ really matter to me where I get picked. I just want that shot.
On other individual workouts he has set up
The Cowboys on March 29. I’ll be flying out there.
On this chapter of his life
I’m real excited. It’s another step in my life. I can’t wait to get started.
CORNERBACK SYD’QUAN THOMPSON:
On doing position drills but not running
I didn’t run at the Combine. I just did the drills. The drills are fine because I wasn’t really pushing off it and putting too much pressure on it.
On whether he is concerned his hamstring injury will hurt his draft stock
Everybody pretty much knows that I’m hurt. However it plays itself out is how it is.
On whether he’s frustrated he’s not able to work out as much for teams because of the injury
It’s frustrating that I’m not 100 percent and able to run full speed. It’s just something that I have to deal with. I wish I wasn’t but I just have to work around it and try to get healthy.
On scouts watching him on film versus watching him run
They know what I can do on film. The biggest thing is seeing me run and I was hurt. I don’t know what goes on inside their heads. I can only control what I can do.

I always think it’s odd when athletes give quotes at this time of year that imply they didn’t give their college football career 100%. For instance, when Best says he used to eat a lot of fast food.
Then I realize, these guys were students. I remember being a student. They aren’t professionals. So I shouldn’t feel irked when they are honest and admit they are now being more professional about football. Since they are now in the process of becoming pros.
But I can honestly say it is odd to always hear players say they are in the best shape of their life after their college football days are done.

Juancho – if you have a job interview, would you not give yourself the best shot to be hired for the job? i.e.: not go out to drink the night before, get decent sleep, rehearse responses – skills, experiences, life shaping moments, etc?
That’s what these kids are doing. I find it highly unlikely that Best will never again try fast food once he is in the NFL.

You have a good point Charlie. Plus these guys are college students first, and football players second.

Juancho, They are 18, limited budget…classes, school work, practices… I don’t think going to durant food court or eating at the chipotle on telegraph is considered not giving it your all…it’s a bit harsh.
These are kids, not superhuman robots (which we do treat them like sometimes).

I’ve never heard it called Durant food court before…
