Gary Franklin Jr. and top-seeded Santa Ana-Mater Dei HS (31-1) moved into the semifinals of the CIF Southern California Division I regionals, beating Rancho Verde 80-48 on Thursday night. Franklin, who scored 29 points in the Monarchs’ previous game, had 16 points and five here and held Vanderbilt-bound Kyle Fuller to four first-half points. By then, the issue was pretty much settled.
Mater Dei, ranked sixth nationally by MaxPreps, faces Woodland Hills-Taft HS on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles-Price HS, featuring Cal signees Allen Crabbe and Richard Solomon, pulled away from Oaks Christian to win 68-42 in the Division IV quarterfinals. Top-seeded Price (30-3) hosts Pacific Hills (20-11) on Saturday in the semifinals.
Oaks Christian baffled Price for a while with a zone defense, and Crabbe (nine points) and Solomon (eight) struggled much of the night, even as their team gradually pulled away.

It bears tracking 2 other players on the Mater Dei reports:
* UCLA-bound Tyler Lamb, who scored 21 and had five assists. Lamb is a 4 star SG, at 6’3″.
* He had help. Keala King (Arizona State) scored 23. Rivals.com has King listed as a 5-star PG (PG!!!), even though he is 6’5″ and often leads Mater Dei in rebounding.
Based on the broadcast of last week’s championship game that was on my Fosx Sports channel, both Lamb and King appear to have big games up around the rim. Franklin appears to be more an Ayinde Ubaka type guard. You heard that comparison here first.
