Basketball: Pre-selection reading

By Jeff Faraudo

Here’s my game story from Saturday’s Pac-10 tournament final with Mike Montgomery railing a bit against a ridiculous suggestion by CBS analysts that Cal should be a “bubble” team for the NCAA Tournament field.

While you’re there, check out photographer Jose Carlos Fajardo’s nice slide show on the Cal-UW game.

Jeff – can you please do an article on how Cal lost 2 points because of a tight net – two points that ended up costing them to game?

Go back to Amoke’s follow dunk to start the game. The ball went thru the cylinder but popped out because of the spin action on the net. It’s a freaky thing that happens once in a blue moon. Actually, I hear it happened to Memphis yesterday when a dude dunked, the ball hit his shoulder coming down and popped out – no basket. Memphis ended up losing the game and is now, supposedly out of the tournament.

In Cal’s case, I feel we also would have won the game with those two extra points. Randle would have gone to the line and nailed both free throws for a 1 point win. Of course, you can argue that UW wouldn’t have played aggressively to foul him, but then we’d have had a shot at the buzzer to win.

That nobody is talking about this (that I can tell) is killing me. Misery loves company, and I’d love some company on this one.

    Thanks.

They actually gave Omoke the basket. I think the official scorer updated the score after looking at the play 30 seconds later but the announcers just didn’t notice it.

The ball was never taken out of bounds under the basket.
    Review your tape. No basket.
    Or, read about it here:

19:44 0-0 Omondi Amoke Offensive Rebound.
19:42 0-0 Omondi Amoke missed Two Point Dunk Shot.

Really could have used those two points, eh?

  5. Will Says:

The basket didn’t count. I’m not well-versed enough on the rules to say anything about it – but honestly, it was the first play of the game, and who knows if the situation would have been the same even if that basket counted. Whatever, crap happens, and as long as idiots like Seth Davis and Jay Bilas stay in the studio instead of in the selection room, we’re good to go.

You’re right, Will, but I wanted the Pac 10 tourney title. Doesn’t much matter to me if we lose in the 2nd or 3rd round. It’s kind of the same difference. But the Pac10 tourney title would have been nice.
Basketball kind of sucks because refs have so much to do with the outcome. A foul called or not called on a key player, forcing him to the bench – that’s huge.

Buffalo, NY is in the West region?

Cal is seeded #8 and playing Louisville.

I will be trying to make a bracket challenge for all who roam the Bay Area comment boards to enter as their name/avatar so we can get some good smack talk going on. If anyone has suggestions let me know, I will probably use ESPN unless someone tells me a better option. I’ll get it up by tomarrow afternoon, hopefully.

    The Gauntlet Is Thrown!

Join espn’s Tournament Challenge group “Bay Area Bracket” to go up against those of us who frequent these boards.

Please limit yourself to ONE bracket entry (none of this hedge your bets crap with different options – so you choose loyalty over accuracy at your own risk) and use your name/title/avatar that you post with on the various Bay Area Comment boards. The more who enter, the better.

We got hosed. I’d much rather be Washington as an 11-seed against a questionable Marquette team with a likelihood of playing New Mexico than to be an 8-seed. How does New Mexico get a 3-seed after losing to SDSU way before its tourney final, and we lose in the finals (close game) and we get an 8?

  12. K1W Says:

Cal versus Louisville will be exciting. Montgomery versus Pitino; who wouldn’t want to see that coaching matchup? And if Cal earns a win there, a chance to play Duke; and another even bigger coaching legend – we can hope for 1993 over again?

I think Jamal would be motivated for that game. I’m sure all the Cal players are very excited by their draw, and looking forward to the challenge (instead of feeling “hosed”). The only thing that would have made this part of the draw more interesting would be to have Morgan State (with Todd Bozeman), as the team playing Duke.

    Go Bears!

  13. Eric Says:

K1W – I guess if your view is correct, Cal’s players would have preferred to be a 16-seed so that we could have a chance of a rematch against Kansas.

  14. K1W Says:

@ Eric – “At-large” teams are (almost) never seeded below #12, so this is about as “challenging” for Cal as it gets, to potentially play a #1 seed in the second round. And I’m sure the Cal players and coaches (though maybe not some fans) are enthusiastic about their draw.
