Basketball: Cal vs. Big East a mixed bag

By Jeff Faraudo
Monday, March 15th, 2010 at 1:27 pm in Basketball, NCAA Tournament.

Although Friday’s NCAA Tournament game will be Cal’s first against Louisville, the Bears boast an all-time win-loss record of 20-14 against current members of the Big East Conference.

Cal also never has faced Marquette, Rutgers or St. John’s, but actually has a winning record against seven Big East programs.

The Bears are 4-2 against current Big East teams in NCAA play, but that’s a little misleading. Cal has beaten only one Big East school in the NCAAs since 1960, posting a 75-68 win over Villanova in the 1996-97 tournament.

On the other hand, a couple of those defeats weren’t exactly fair fights. Cal lost to UConn in a 1990 NCAA game played at Hartford, Conn., and then to Pitt in a 2002 NCAA game in Pittsburgh. Both of those were labeled neutral-site games, but it sure didn’t sound like it inside the arena.

Here’s Cal’s team-by-team record against Big East schools:

CAL beat De Paul in the 1999 NIT

Yes they did, Rocko. Thanks for the nice catch. (They actually played at DePaul twice that season, losing losing in November, then winning in March). I have updated the record.

Updated the list again with the 2008-09 home win over DePaul . . . man, do I need sleep.

Regarding that game against Pitt in Pittsburgh in ’02: that was absolute BS! Pitt was a 3 seed getting to play in their hometown, albeit not in their home arena. I would love to know how many 6 seeds have had to play 3 seeds in their hometowns in the 2nd round. None other than Cal I bet, ever. Why would the NCAA reward a 3 seed with a couple homegames? Why force Cal to go to Jacksonville with the 8 seed while UW gets to go to San Jose with the 11 seed, a much more favorable matchup? Utah St. a 12th seed gets to play in semi-nearby Spokane. I would be p.o.ed if I was the 5 seed they will face. The seeding and pods are a farce. Go Bears!
