Basketball: Crabbe named state player of year

Cal signee Allen Crabbe has been named the Gatorade state Player of the Year for California.

The 6-foot-6 wing from Price HS in Los Angeles averages 23 ppg and has a 3.93 grade-point average, according to the Los Angeles Times.

He and fellow Cal recruit Richard Solomon will lead top-seeded Price (32-3) against San Diego-Parker HS (20-9) in the CIF Southern California Division IV regional championship game Saturday night at Colony HS in Ontario.

Meanwhile, Cal signee Gary Franklin Jr. and Santa Ana-Mater Dei HS (32-1) will face Los Angeles-Westchester (30-3) for the SoCal Division I crown Saturday night at the Galen Center. Mater Dei is top-seeded in the tournament, ranked No. 1 in Southern California and is No. 6, according to Max Preps’ Xcellent 25 national rankings.

The Monarchs have beaten Westchester the past eight times they’ve met, although this will be their first clash since 2006.

So, year 1 of Monty recruiting and we snagged the best player in the state of California.

Year 2 of Monty’s Cal career, we already accomplished something we couldn’t for the last 50 years.

    Dude. This. Is. AWESOME!

Future is bright for CAL basketball (and football).

This makes me feel a lot less concerned about our scoring for next year. We’ll have some bigs in the frontcourt with Zhang, MSF, Kamp, Bak, Solomon & Omoke, (assuming his suspension doesn’t morph into being kicked off the team or anything), and then wings and guards including Crabbe, Franklin, Smith, Gutierrez, Seeley.

That looks like a very competitive team to me. A return to the Dance doesn’t seem out of the question at all. The key will be how quickly the freshman can bring their game to PAC-10 playing level, but these kinds of recruits sure look like the kind that can step in and contribute right away.

But what am I talking about? We’ve got bigger fish to fry this weekend in Louisville and Duke. Let’s see our Seniors MARCH into the MADNESS!!! Go Bears! Beat the Cards!

I am expecting these guys to come in and contribute right away.

This isn’t football, in BBall, it’s oftentimes the youngest players that are the best…

    Go Bears!

I hope Cal continues to recruit great players who are also good students, who want to graduate and play college ball for four years. At least at Cal, Coach Montgomery can go get transfer students (unlike at Stanford).

I find it pretty remarkable when Nikola is the fifth player and there are FIVE Cal seniors on the floor. What other team in the NCAA tournament this year can do that?

Cal will look very different next year, but they will NOT be a weak team.

  • Bears

With Monty at the helm Cal will continue to get stronger and stronger.

There is obviously much more to read about this. I think you made some decisive points in Features also.
