Basketball: It’s the West, not the Worst

By Jeff Faraudo
Saturday, March 20th, 2010 at 8:56 am in Basketball, NCAA Tournament.

There are two conferences still unbeaten in the NCAA Tournament headed into Saturday’s games, and they’re not the Big East, ACC or Big 12.

Try the Pac-10 and the West Coast Conference, each 2-0 after the first round.

AROUND THE PAC-10

– Washington vs. New Mexico at San Jose, 2:30 p.m.: The Huskies (25-9) have won eight in a row by an average margin of 15 points and have the unanimous endorsement of ESPN’s trio of Dick Vitale, Hubert Davis and Digger Phelps. In spite of that, UW probably has a good shot at sending home the Lobos (30-4) because they can run with New Mexico and they’re more disruptive on defense.

– Vitale just said Oregon should hire Bob Knight as its new coach. What, Phog Allen isn’t available?

LOCAL HEROES

Digger Phelps predicts Saint Mary’s will beat Villanova today. None of his ESPN colleagues agree . . . Wendell McKines (Richmond HS) had seven points and seven rebounds in New Mexico State’s 70-67 loss to Michigan State on Friday night.

HA! spit take, well played sir! But good to know that Dickie V can remove his nose from between Knights cheeks to both breathe AND talk.

    Go Gaels!

Big East is an over rated bunch of losers. I guess if you suckle at the teet of ESPN you get overhyped. One thing that ESPN couldn’t do was fix the games. Enjoy the extra free time in spring Big Least.

  4. MoreNCsarecoming Says:

SMC is the best Bay Area college basketball program. Why not set up a rivalry between neighboring schools?

    Oh I think I know why…

  5. rollonubears Says:

sure is nice to relax and watch all these great games today knowing our team is going to be playing tomorrow night with a chance to knock off the #1 seed.

is this sanction week for u$c, or is that next week.

MoreNcoming Dumb Idea. Cal needs recognition nationally to get better recruiting; it does not to elevate a local rival. Would a St Mary’s – Cal regular season game ever get on national television? It would be like Obama inviting Sen Brown (R- Mass) to all his press conferences in order to televise both sides. That would make Brown seem important. Why not just make St Mary’s part of the Pac 10? Forget it.

Much better would be a home and away with Texas, Indiana, or Florida and get us some national recognition.

Sportsline CBS asked in its daily poll which teams looked strongest yesterday> I believe there were 8 choices …. Cal wasn’t one of them.
Cal fans should think big and post on national sites – not see how small we could go. Would you also like a series with Cal State Hayward and SJS State?

  7. milo Says:

Haha, I heard $C was going to join the Big West Conference where they’d meet their intellectual and academic superiors.

20% is your graduation rate for basketball players.
    48% for USC

  9. milo Says:

Number of $C players who took cash: 1
Nubmer of Cal players who took cash: 0

Number of $C coaches who provided cash: 1
Number of Cal coaches who provided cash: 0

Bottmline: $C is a dirty program, hoops, football, dirty

    GO Dawgs!

  11. SteveNTexas Says:

Morencoming – you are not a SMC basketball player so the grad rate is irrelevant. I see you had no retort to why Cal shouldn’t bother with WMC because no one would care about that matchup.

A degree from Cal is worth way more than one from SMC- just like my college degree is worth more than my son’s high school diploma.

  12. milo Says:

UW destroyed UNM. Nice. The West has SMC and UW in the Sweet 16. Lets hope Cal can make it a hat trick. Now that would be something and it would kick the whole Pac-10 is weak stuff in the nuts.

    Go Bears!

  13. abe Says:

Whew. If Cal can indeed make it through, this would be the sweetest sweet 16, ever!

Really don’t understand why morencs enjoys irritating Cal fans so much. At first I thought it was all in good fun sports rivalry trash talking. It’s been two years later since you started leaving these comments on this blog among others and I just don’t understand why you hate on Cal so much.

We’re in the 2nd round in what’s been an amazing basketball season for us in so many years. USC is under sanctions and didn’t even play in the Pac-10 tournament. Yet you still come here and try to stir something up. At first it’s annoying but now it’s sort of sad and pathetic. It makes me wonder why morencs (you) hate on Cal so much. And if you’re going to trash talk wait for football season. We just won the pac-10 championship and we’re in the big dance…don’t know what you have left to say seriously.

  15. milo Says:

    She/it is off her/its meds.

  16. Bears Says:

Pac 10 titles (football, basketball) this academic year for Cal 1. Pac 10 titles this academic year for sc 0.
Number of sc trolls who stock Cal everywhere 1.
Number of Cal trolls who stock sc everywhere 0.
    Like those #’s.
    Go Bears, knock off #1!

  17. K1W Says:

If Northern Iowa can beat Kansas, Cal can beat Duke and the Zags can beat Syracuse. Go West! Go Bears! Let’s take out a few more #1′s.

Great work today by St. Mary’s and Washington. Both very impressive wins, once again.

  18. BlueNGold Says:

Nickle, the reason that moron is so psychotically obsessive in its hate for Cal and its athletic programs is because moron was rejected for admission by Cal. Even though moron claims that ‘daddy’ is a Cal alum and big donor to the athletic dept., ‘daddy’ could not buy moron a ticket into the school. Hence, the endless and obsessive Cal hate, all over this blog as well as the SFGate comments sections for articles about Cal sports, and, probably, others as well.

  19. Dan Says:

Also, the 20% grad rate for hoops was 4 years ago, under Braun. They are irrelevant to now, ireelevant to Monty. Braun was a mediocre coach in every way. Monty is tremendous.

Any day now, huh? Any day now, $C is going to get slapped, right? $C puts the $ in $C. All done with no class fans.

Win or lose today, Go Bears!
