Football: A quick update

Helping out on our copy desk tonight, but not before I was able to go to the second-to-last practice of the spring. The Bears changed up their final week a bit, going in full pads for the first time tonight instead of Thursday. In essence, this was Cal’s last “real” practice. The Bears will wrap things up on Thursday with just a helmets-only practice that will last only about an hour.

Coach Jeff Tedford reiterated after practice that the quarterback competition, along with most other positions on the field, will last into fall camp. There obviously a few positions we know are set — Mike Mohamed will play inside linebacker, Shane Vereen will play tailback, Bryan Anger will be the punter. But most positions are fluid — at least that’s the public stance. There are other positions that one can make a pretty educated guess at, but the coaching staff will wait to make those final decisions in the fall.

Speaking of quarterbacks, Brock Mansion continued to wear a boot on his sprained foot and didn’t practice again Tuesday.

More to come….
