Basketball: It’s official — 68 teams in 2011

The NCAA Board of Directors today approved a 68-team field for the NCAA Tournament, beginning next season. The move was a rubber-stamp approval one week after NCAA officials made the recommendation.

The expansion is the first since 2001, when the tournament went from 64 to 65 teams.

The format for the tournament has yet to be worked out and likely will be announced sometime this summer.

I think the change is fine — a good way to get three more teams into the field without losing the essence or charm of the event. A 96-team format would have been entirely different, purely a money grab, with no promise that the tournament would be any better than it’s been, or even as good.

What do you think?

  • uh oh.

I think they would have been lambasted if they went to 96. This way, they can inch their way there.
    65 teams was stupid, too.

i hope they don’t have 4 play-in games, one for each region, and then do the 64 as usual. that would be lame. 65 is already senseless.
