Cal does have 12 on scholarship and one still vacant. I guess I have been made dizzy by the large number of recruits for 2010. Thanks for keeping track of all of them, and for correcting my error in counting.

Your understanding of the 13-man scholarship limit is correct; your count is wrong — the players you listed add up to 12, not 11. And Monty neither gave a scholarship to any of the walkons or to Amoke, who is gone.

David,
They’ll sign a big as soon as they can convince one they believe is good enough. They’re not simply taking a guy because he’s tall or wide. I’ll have more on this, but Montgomery feels like among the players on the roster who can play PG, only Cobbs and Smith are pure points. I think he just wanted more depth, more options. And he seems to really like Cobbs.

Division I basketball players who transfer must sit out the entire next season, provided they played at all in the second semester at their originating school. In other words, had Cobbs left Minnesota in early December before the next term began, he could have become eligible at Cal after final exams next December. But he played the entire season, so he sits out an entire season.

The current roster has the following players on scholarship: Returnees Max, Markhuri, Jorge, Kamp, Smith, Bak Bak, plus recruits Solomon, Crabbe, Franklin, Rossi, Murray, and now Cobbs. That is 11 players on scholarship for sure.

Now unless Montgomery gave a scholarship to one of last season’s walk-ons like Carter, Powers, or Thurman, or unless he let Omoke keep his scholarship after dismissing him from the team, he should have TWO vacant scholarships left, not one. With Markhuri graduating, that would give him three to use for next year, if he wants.

At any rate the competition for the guard positions on this team will be intense. And in a game, when Montgomery decides to go small, they will be lights out!
