Football: AT&T is next year

By Jonathan Okanes
Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at 11:13 am in Football, off-season stuff.

Amid all the discussion around Cal’s move to AT&T Park, one important detail appears to continue to get mixed up by some fans.

Cal is playing its home games at AT&T Park in 2011, not this upcoming season.

There have been some around the football program who have been surprised how many people think the move to AT&T is for this upcoming season. In a way, it’s somewhat understandable. The announcement was made earlier this month, four months before the 2010 season even gets underway. But the athletic department decided to make the move public now to allow fans to being planning for 2011, and undoubtedly to start drumming up excitement.

But indeed, there still is this season to be played at Memorial Stadium. Coach Jeff Tedford has been one that has consistently heard the mistake being made about the timing of the move, and provided these comments to help ensure people actually show up to Memorial Stadium this season.

“Our football program is focused on preparing for the 2010 campaign. We
still have an entire season to play at Memorial Stadium before we even start thinking about what it will be like at AT&T Park.”

“I would like to reiterate that we’re excited to have the opportunity to
play the 2010 season at Memorial Stadium, before moving to AT&T Park the following year while Memorial Stadium is undergoing renovations. We’re going to need everyone’s support to help make it a great 2010. We look forward to the continued support that creates such a home field advantage.”

So just to clarify: If you show up at AT&T Park on Sept. 4 expecting to see the Cal-UC Davis game, you might get a little lonely (the Giants play at the Dodgers that day, so you won’t even have that going for you).

Dodgers vs. Giants at Memorial stadium? Cool.

  • rollonubears

they need a “last year at memorial” campaign

  • covinared

KICK IT OFF WITH DODGERS VS. GIANTS

A season at ATT will be fun and I’m looking forward to it. Memorial however is home and after the renovation and SAHPC, it’s going to be awesome.

They are making it clear if you have season tickets in 2010 at MS you can get them at AT&T in 2011. I heard yesterday that Cal has 38,000 season ticket holders so with AT&T only holding 45,000 there won’t be a big single ticket sale, if any. It’s going to be sad to see only a couple of thousand USC fans or less, next year at AT&T. Where will they put the Trojan Band?

  • uh oh.

    I’m EXACTLY with Rollon.
I’m bringing my kids to every Memorial game possible so they can remember what it WAS like, and I can relive my own childhood memories.

I’m sure I will like the New Memorial, but I must cement my memories of Old Memorial while it’s still there.

Will that include all of the losing seasons?

No Heismans, No BCS, No Rose Bowl, no undisputed Pac 10 titles?

  • uh oh.

Mostly it would include fond memories of a 6-14 year old kid who:

    * Looked for Oski and ran down to shake his hand.
    * Ate the chocolate malts with the wooden stick and threw the round lid onto the field when nobody was looking.
    * Tailgated with the family before the game. Food, Music, Football. Catch with brother, father, grandfather…
    * Celebrated the greatest Play in the history of college football.
    * Observed all the crazy behavior along frat row to and from the stadium.
    * Collected aluminum cans in the stadium after games as part of a recycling program.
    * Marched thru the streets of Berkeley with the band.
    * Ate candy every time we scored – a tradition in the Old Blues section.
    * Spent half the game going back and forth from the grandparents 50 yard line seats and the family section. Chain link fence barriers were annoying.
    * Played the tape of Starkey’s call of The Play during tailgates against Stanfurd and turned it up REAL LOUD so they could hear.
    * Squished into the bench seats on row 50 at the 50 – they really packed ‘em in, knees in the back – even for a little guy.
    * Watched the real old people wave as they got announced for celebrating their 70th or 80th Big Game down on the field at halftime and wondered if they would announce my grandparents someday. Sadly, they discontinued that tradition, but maybe they can revive it for a 92 yr old this year!

Moron – the things you mention just don’t matter in the eyes of a child. They don’t even know the score. So, no, those items you mention won’t be included.

  • rollonubears

    solid.

  • KoreAmBear

Dodgers and Giants used to play at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum (Wally Moon Shots) so why not have them play at CMS?

  • Juancho

To add to the confusion, when I read this headline I thought it mean Cal was playing at AT&T this upcoming season. Everytime I hear “next season at AT&T” I think, next season is this year. They should all say “season after next.”

Anyone aware of what Lendale White did to get cut by the Seahawks? Did he steal some donuts?

I guess Petey believes in accountability only in the pros.

    SURVEY SAYS:

LenDale White likely facing 4-game drug suspension, according to sources.

Cushing, Ellison, White…drug culture in South Central, at its finest.

  • noduck

perhaps tedford should stop calling people and saying how excited he is to play at att.

don’t say next season, don’t say season after next. say att in 2011. no ambiguity about that.

  • michias

I went to a football game and a baseball game broke out!
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker-Jacks…..

  • BlueNGold

They are referring to the AT&T move as ‘next season’ because this is 2010 and ‘this season’ begins in September.

  • Larry

You are an idiot if you don’t know that in 2011 Cal will play at AT&T park! If you don’t know that, then you don’t deserve to attend Cal football games.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

LOL. Here is an article in Sac Bee about the Grant 5 including Moala and not even one mention of you guys. HAHAHAHA

JO, how do you think the revelations of drug use by recent USC alums will affect the NCAA sanctions imposed on their football program?
