Word from Cal after grades were posted on Wednesday: As expected, freshman forward Bak Bak passed his spring classes and is academically eligible again.

Bak missed the second semester last season after becoming academically ineligible. A 6-foot-9 native of the Sudan, Bak averaged 5.4 minutes in eight games last season, contributing 1.3 ppg and 2.0 rpg.

In a May 19 interview, before Bak’s eligibility status was official, coach Mike Montgomery expressed confidence that Bak was on the right track.

“He actually really turned it around this spring. I’m really pleased,” Montgomery said.  ”He kind of gets it now. He was just undermanned coming into this thing, not knowing what to study, how to study. He felt he let us down. He really grabbed a hold of this thing this spring.”

Kudos to the Social Welfare department. They pass more football players through their program in good standing than Riley does with his arm in the course of a season.
