The Oakland Soldiers traveling team — featuring three prospects being recruited by Cal — won their fourth straight game at the Nike Peach Jam Elite Youth Basketball League 24-team national finals in Augusta, S.C., clinching a spot in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.
Bishop O’Dowd HS junior-to-be Brandon Ashley, one of those being pursued by the Bears, had 25 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots Tuesday evening, leading the Soldiers to a 99-92 win over the New York Gauchos. Kyle Wiltjer added 19 points and 12 rebounds and Jabari Brown of Oakland HS had 11 points.
The Soldiers complete pool play Wednesday against Team Takeover, also 4-0. Both teams already have locked up spots in the quarterfinals as the top two finishers in Pool A.
