Basketball: Tough morning at Peach Jam for Cal recruiting targets

Three players with the Oakland Soldiers who are being recruited by the Golden Bears suffered their first defeat this morning at the Nike Peach Jam Elite Youth Basketball League national finals in Augusta, S.C. The Soliders lost 82-57 to Team Takeaway of Washington D.C., finishing pool play at 4-1 and in second place. They will face the St. Louis Eagles (4-1) in tonight’s quarterfinal elimination game.

Oakland HS’s Jabari Brown was held to five points on 2-for-8 shooting, Bishop O’Dowd HS’s Brandon Ashley scored two points on 0-for-4 from the field, and Portland’s Kyle Wiltjer had nine points and seven rebounds, shooting 3-for-5.

The Soldiers, who entered the game as the 24-team tournament’s highest-scoring squad,¬†converted just 31 percent from the field and were outrebounded 45-29.

Brown and Wiltjer are top-25 prospects in the class of 2011 and Ashley recently was rated the No. 5 overall prospect in the class of 2012. All three have told me that Cal is on their list of potential schools.

Is Lebron still involved with the Oakland Soldiers?

  • Jeff Faraudo

Don’t believe so, Rey. Former El Cerrito HS star Drew Gooden helps sponsor the team.
