Uh Oh- I think you are over analyzing what is basically three one sentence quotes attributed to Tedford. If the guy has academic issues that prevent him from being on the team, why not let him get that worked out at a JC, instead of running the risk that he flunks out of Cal? If Whiteside is looking to transfer, he is going to have the same eligibility issues at another school, since it is the NCAA academic requirements that have to be met. And as far as breaking into the LB unit is concerned, have you considered that perhaps it is both your possibilities that Tedford had in mind?

tedford overestimates the value of his practices. talent trumps practice reps in college football, especially with the bears. this his been a recurring problem with his coaching style, and the reason we were forced to sit through year after year of nate longshore. he simply refuses to play the best players until he feels they have a “better grasp of the system” or “more experience.” he should simplify the offense, and put the best guys out there, every time. lagemann was an incredible receiver last year, but he only got the ball once or twice a game because “he’s young and inexperienced, but he’s really got a lot of potential.” screw that. let the best kids play.

also, the league has terribly underestimated shane vereen. look out pac10.

I interpret things a bit differently. Tedford, in my opinion, only means that if Whiteside were to be deemed eligible today, he already missed too many workouts and sessions to catch up and realistically get it all down to be effective enough to get playing time.

If he enrolls in CC this fall, and not play football, he would build up his credits to get academically up to speed. If he doesn’t, he won’t qualify anyway, so I am not worried about it.

Finally, if he doesn’t want to be a Golden Bear, he will walk anyways. If he wants to be here, he’ll get his act together and be at CAL for spring ball 2011.

And what’s this about Tedford saying Whiteside probably couldn’t break into the LB group? Does he mean, hard to break in now that Sept is upon us and he’s missed prior workouts? Or do he mean that it’s hard to break in this year as a freshman?

If the latter, then how does that translate to Forbes and the other Frosh LB’s?

Martin and Whiteside were regarded as the two top LB recruits, no? If they can’t break in, then can any of the freshmen?

If I’m Tedford, why would I be okay with him going to a JC in the Fall? If I’m Tedford, I think I’d much rather keep the boy at home, especially since I’d get to have my Cal academic helpers involved, not to mention having him be involved with being a Bear.

Meanwhile, if I’m Whiteside, I think I don’t bother enrolling at Cal, lest I end up like Chris Martin – wanting to transfer and then having to sit out a year. This is especially the case if he enrolls at Cal and cannot qualify academically, no?

If Whiteside instead attends a JC, and changes his mind about Cal, isn’t he free to go anywhere next Fall?

So, if you’re not on the team now, why enroll at Cal and marry yourself to Cal. Maybe his JC academic work will allow to go to only, say, Fresno State, no UCB.

Not a good sign. Maybe means nothing, but if he was like, “I’m a Bear!”, then he’d be taking classes at Cal in the fall!

Actually that is a good sign…that he is staying at Cal instead of getting out of Dodge….best thing for him to get acclimated, especially if he has a slight learning disability which has been rumored…We still want this beast playing for Cal…and want him to succeed
