By Jonathan Okanes
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 9:53 pm in Football, Mid-week.
For those of you in the Walnut Creek area, or want to take a trip to Walnut Creek, some players will be appearing at Broadway Plaza on Saturday from 2:30-4 p.m. Don’t know who the players are yet, but they will be available for autographs and pictures. There also will be prizes awarded.
Of course, you can meet all the players and coaches earlier in the day at Fan Appreciation Day.

I’m sure it makes the players feel nice and adds motivation to see them.
It seems we are picked for 6th place in both football and basketball this year which team do fans think have more “upside” bball or football?

football. the hoops team needs more than one big man with a bum knee. but if xhang steps up, it could be a different story. i think the bears can win the pac10 this year on the football field. it’s just a question of riley and the receivers getting connected. the running game is there. the o-line should be better. we will give up more points than usual, but we will also probably get a few more fumble recoveries and picks that could lead to scores. overall, i think we’re a better team than last year. whether that’s enough to beat oregon or some of the other more improved schools, is the question. either way, it’s going to be a great season. i can’t wait! go bears.

For clarity, the Bears will be at the U-thread store in Broadway plaza. The U-thread store will be giving away 2 tickets for every $50 purchase, while supplies last.

Remember, the Pac-10 is ‘wide-open’ this year. It will most likely be like 1999 where 8-3 got you to the Rose Bowl! CAL can go 9-3 or 10-2 if some things fall into place this year. I am optimistic for this year.

@ Arizona & OSU worry me though.

Schedule is favorable.
7 out of 12 are home games.
Wazzou on the road.
We finish the season with 3 straight home games in November (Oregon, Furd, Washington).
USC, Zona, OSU on the road. Let’s say worst case we drop 2 of those games. We will still be competitive come November and if we win out at home…we’re GOLDEN! Don’t expect any team to go undefeated or even 1 loss in conference play.

Bears need to come out strong and win some tough games the first half of the season. If they do that they have as good a shot as anyone. Lots of home games late and young players will have gained valuable experience.
Our defense better not give up more points than last year or we are middle of the Pac again. We need our defense to be much much better (along with ST’s) to win the tough ones.
Can’t wait for the season, will be a lot of fun!

USC, Zona, OSU on the road?
The worst case is not dropping 2; the worst case is dropping 3

OSU?
Here’s something funny (schadenfreude) about OSU:
“A redshirt Oregon State University football player has been dismissed from the team after police say they found him naked and intoxicated in a stranger’s home and had to use stun guns to take him into custody.”

Calduke,
You can count, excellent. Worst case for the year is 0-12. Did I have to spell that out too?
It’s my opinion that the worst case is that we drop 2. Personally, I think we drop 1 out of those and drop 1 along the way on the way to 2 losses in the Pac-10. Having 3 home games in a row at the end is very favorable if we’re in the hunt.

Thanks for the compliment.
I hope your prediction for a worst case scenario of
10-2 for the Bears is correct. That would be great.

I will stick my neck out and state that Kevin Riley will have a better year and more wins than Jake Locker and/or Andrew Luck.
Shane Vereen will be in the top three running backs for yards gained on the ground.
We will finish in the top three in the conference.
Go Bears!

BoaltBlue- great minds think alike! I agree with all of your predictions. Realize though that Luck & Locker have little talent around them, and has no one like Shane Vareen.
