Yes, I read that Gary Peterson article. He says of Allen:
“…revealing himself to be the big play ingredient Jeff Tedford’s offense has been missing the past two seasons.”
It’s such complete a brain fart to suggest that Cal was lacking a “big play” ingredient in the past two seasons. Uh, Jahvid Best? Only the most explosive runner in school history?
I understand he was surely thinking that Riley was lacking a partner on the perimeter (receiver), but even still – that’s a stupid comment. Cal has had plenty of big plays. In fact, on the radio show driving home from the game, they said Cal had 70 “big plays” (20+ yards) last season.
We’ve had plenty of exciting big plays and big players. What we’ve lacked is consistency: QB accuracy, special teams (kickoffs and coverage), and consistently owning the line of scrimmage on offense or getting pressure on the QB defensively so he can’t sit back and pick us apart.
We will simply have to wait and see if those things are a trademark of THIS team as the season progresses.

Uh-Oh, I agree with your point. It is just another attempt by a less-than-average writer to sensationalize a story to express the outstanding play by Kennan Allen.
The kid IS the real deal, ‘fo ‘sho! I just pray Allen stays all four years at Cal.
Riley looked good against an FCS defense, and really only threw on bad pass where his feet were out of position. Defense looked great! And, happily, Tavecchio kicked past the 5yd line on a couple of kickoffs.
I honestly believe Cal is a sleeper. After Week 1: Positives: Oregon, UCLA, Washington, & Stanfurd all at home. Negs: @AZ, @OSU. Neutral: USC on the road- we will have to see the trojans against a real team not on a vacation in hawaii.
OFF TOPIC: I do have two complaints about gameday operations yesterday: 1) AC Transit, all info on Calbears.com said the shuttle from rockridge bart would drop off at I-House. We got dumped at College & Brancifort. As a person with a disability this took me forever to walk up the hill, and cause great pain. 2) What happened to all the Porta-Potties at Gate 5? This caused a huge line in the concourse mens room.

unless he gets hurt, i’d say the odds of allen sticking around for 4 years about about 100-1. the guy is in better shape than desean, physically, already. i was skeptical of his handles, going into the season. he seemed to do just fine.
oregon had me worried yesterday, but they played a team with ALL SORTS of personnel, management and mental problems that went 1-11 last year. a backup running back scored half of their points, and new mexico showed no ability to stop the run, whatsoever. their QB was average at best. we should be fine there. we should also be competitive against oregon state. can’t wait ’till next week. my only concern, just to reiterate what others have said, is riley’s panic every time he’s under pressure. if he doesn’t get over that, fast, we are done. watched a lot of games this weekend. plenty of freshmen qbs stepping right into pressure to make completions. riley, not even close. i wasn’t impressed at all with sweeney. he ducked and ran on just about every play. nice results, but that’s not what you want to see. i’d like to see hinder get some snaps. that dude is legit.

Game Summary
Good News – Bad News
Good News – Keenan Allen is the Real deal!!
Bad News – The Bears need 4-5 more Real Deals to finish in PAC-10 top five.

Really well said Uh oh. But really, what does Gary Peterson know about Cal? He’s a general columnist You and I can probably deduce more accurately about Cal football.
One thing I will say about having a weapon on the outside compared to Jahvid Best. A RB has to have a lot go right to put them in a position to have a big play. It requires winning several matchups. You can get a big time WR isolated a lot more and a lot more easily, though Allen seemed to make every defender on the field miss on a few of his big plays.
Nice way to start the season- glorious weather, nice crowd (a bit too quiet for me), hanging out with my fellow Cal fans/friends, a win that everybody feels good about, and hey… college football season is here! Life is grand!!

One other thing- I was mildly disappointed in our O-Line in the running game. I thought we had to work a little too hard for what we got- against a subpar opponent. I am curious to see how we do as the sason progresses. It seems a lot of our better running plays were the result of the rb effort.

funny i was thinking the same thing, seems like someone needs to remind Patterson about a dude named Best.

Nice win, but I don’t think it really tells us anything. It was UC Davis after all. And it follows along with the JT mold of the last few seasons. Which is the fact that CAL is an above average team that can beat teams with little talent.
I have yet to be impressed with Tedford in big games, though, as he always seems get outcoached (Mike Riley, PC, even Mike Stoops and Karl Dorrell) in spite of the amazing talent CAL has had the last few years- Lynch, Jackson, Forsett, Best.
This Saturday will be a better picture for us against a BCS conference team. Let’s hope JT doesn’t disappoint us this year and he and Ludwig can learn how to use our weapons (Allen, Jones, Vereen) to help the Bears achieve all that they can.

Let’s not forget about Anthony Miller, I think he purposefully was not part of the game plan yesterday as he will be invaluable as a third big, athletic receiver with good hands. He has NFL written all over him, just like a certain FR WR #21. WOW! Kinda, almost, a little bit he reminded me of Jason Kidd in his first games at Cal where it was very obvious that he was already the best player on the court/field despite his age. Keenan Allen, thanks for coming to Cal!!

I have only seen a few highlights of the game, but Vereen laid a very good down field block on one of Allen’s long runs. My criticism may have been undeserved. Way to go Shane!
