Football: Tuesday night update

The weekly press conference usually gets a couple of the local television stations to come out, but there was perfect attendance today. The reason? Keenan Allen, of course.

When you have the type of debut Allen had on Saturday, the attention is going to linger for awhile. Allen has been topic No. 1 among Cal fans since Saturday, and it continued Tuesday.

Allen actually didn’t come to the press conference, which begins about 45 minutes after practice ends on Tuesdays. So the TV vans got there early the cameras and microphones were waiting in the usual post-practice interview area when Allen made the trek up the stadium on his way to the Bears’ temporary locker rooms.

Allen didn’t say anything new or groundbreaking, but it’s a ritual he might have to get used to. Cal’s media relations staff is already talking about making Allen available just one day a week, similar to the arrangement with previous stars like Jahvid Best and DeSean Jackson.

The press conference was attended by Jeff Tedford, Kevin Riley and Cameron Jordan. You can see a transcript of their comments here.

I wonder if making him available more than stars in the past might actually be a good thing for him.

In a sense it will keep him grounded, because he’ll get used to coming out and talking more even when things go poorly. I always got the sense Jahvid and Jackson were a little overprotected.

This is going to be a good thing. Not only because it gives Cal a legit star. It is taking a lot of the attention off of the pieces of this team that are actually going to beat you. Guys like Vereen and Riley can now stay under the radar. Put all the attention on Allen and then those guys will win it in the end. Either way. I’m happy.
