Football: Cal gets 2012 QB

Cal has received an oral commitment from San Ramon Valley High School junior quarterback Zach Kline, who went head-to-head against 2011 commit Kyle Boehm and Archbishop Mitty last Friday night. Coach Jeff Tedford was at the game. We’ll have a story up later.

Here’s a good story – he is a 4 star player who just made his first start at QB -that sounds odd.

Hopefully Tedford got a good look at San Ramon’s placekicker too. He kicked a 47-yarder with seconds to go in the game to win it.

Go Wolves of San Ramon High! My alma mater! Go Bears! He must have “it” the same way Aaron Rodgers did when Tedford saw him back in 2002. One start in high school and Tedford had seen enough to offer him on the spot. Zach beat our next year QB recruit Kyle Boehm, so w3e get both. Go Bears!

I’m fighting the urge to post a comment that counters Scott’s positivity.

Let’s hope he’s another Aaron Rodgers. I was lucky to be in college during Rodgers’ tenure, and boy were those games fun to watch.

That is odd. One mediocre game and he gets offered? Is he a legacy of some sort? Donor’s child?

Kline started 4 games as a soph; his game versus Mitty was the opener of his junior campaign. Kline tore it up at several well attended qb camps, including camps at Cal and Stanford over the past spring and summer. He was a student of Roger Theder, a well-known qb coach. The early recruiting buzz slates Kline as one of the most highly regarded junior qbs in the west, but I don’t believe the various services have enough data to rate him yet.

His stats versus Mitty don’t quite tell the story. At least four misses were the result of drops, but the kid has great touch and accuracy. His field leadership qualities were noticeable.

IMHO, Kline is a great early verbal and Cal fans should be happy if it holds up over the next 16 months.

Kline looks like a great young prospect. Fired up to see his progress the next 6 or so years right here in the East Bay!

I like this kid’s attitude, and he will be a great CAL bear QB in the future.
