Basketball: Oakland High’s Jabari Brown to announce his school on Thursday

Rivals.com is reporting that Oakland HS shooting guard Jabari Brown will announce his college choice on Thursday.

It could be Washington or Arizona State (which made a home visit Tuesday night) or Oregon or UConn, but it almost certainly won’t be Cal.

The Bears were in the mix with Brown early, but that relationship apparently has cooled, and I’m told Cal has backed off recently.

Jabari’s mother, Fannie Brown, told me tonight that announcement will be made live at 2 p.m. on ESPNU, but she declined to say where her son will be when he delivers the news.

The 6-foot-5 Brown, who plays club basketball for the Drew Gooden Oakland Soldiers, is rated as the nation’s No. 22 overall prospect by Rivals, the No. 5 shooting guard. Scout.com also ranks Brown as the No. 5 shooting guard in the country, but has him at No. 14 overall.

He’s not going to Cal because they signed Allen Crabbe, ranked a little lower than Jabari by Rivals at No. 29. It’s hard to say who is better Crabbe or Brown, they both could end up in the NBA. I do think Cal would’ve signed Brown if he hadn’t taken so long with his decision. Cal also has another good wing player in Emerson Murray from Canada. Check out both these players on youtube

    You’re wrong Jay.

  • uh oh.

Do you mean to say, Disappointed, that Brown would have liked to go to Cal, but Cal backed away from him?

  • Crawford

    He’s going to Washington

Are we recruiting well enough to be competitive with the Top 25 or so teams? Has Montgomery recruited better than Braun?

  • Crawford

Monty is a system guy, if he thinks a player can fit into his system he’ll go strong after that guy. Monty doesn’t seem to care about recruiting the local talent.

Sometimes when recruiting the local players it brings on local distractions (cal football- chris martin ring a bell). Cal is heavy at the guard spot, but Brown is the type of player you go after despite what’s on your roster

monty’s doing just fine. can we really criticize a guy who brought jorge in to spark the team, and got 50% more out of ben braun’s guys, AND won the pac10? last year was awesome. this year is certainly going to be a down year with so many freshman, but we still might make the tourney. we need one solid big man. that would be my only criticism right now, but i think monty will pull something off. i’ve got faith in him. his players give it their all, every day. that’s all you can ask. a lot of these high recruits just don’t have the will and determination that monty’s players always show.

Rollunubears – you are absolutely right Have some faith in Monty, guys. Trust he knows what he’s doing and let the results speak for themselves. He’ll get talent…don’t worry.

  • uh oh

    I want 7 feet and 250 lbs!

  • uh oh

Actually, I got a better idea.
Bring in Jabari Brown and run Paul Westhead’s offense!
    Run and Gun!
If Monty can win at small 100 pts per game ball, then he’ll go straight to The Hall.
