Basketball: Monday wrap

Three Pac-10 teams in action Monday night, including . . .

— Stanford: The Cardinal debuted with a 64-48 win over San Diego, despite an uncharacteristic 1-for-7 shooting performance by junior guard Jeremy Green (2 points). Forward Andrew Zimmerman led Stanford with 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Freshman Dwight Powell started and had seven points and four rebounds. The Cardinal’s six freshman combined for 17 points on 6-for-23 shooting.

— UCLA: The Bruins (2-0) used a 26-2 run straddling the two halves to take charge on the way to beating Pepperdine 79-69.  Sophomores Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt and Reeves Nelson scored 20 and 16 points, respectively. JC point guard Lazeric Jones and freshman center Joshua Smith each had 13 points. Freshman guard Tyler Lamb shot 1-for-10.

— USC: The Trojans (2-0) held off visiting Santa Clara 86-73. Maurice Jones, the Trojans’ 5-foot-7 freshman guard from Saginaw, Mich., led the way with 29 points and five assists. Fellow freshman guard Bryce Jones added 15 points — so that’s 44 points from two first-year players. Senior forward Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Quite an outing from USC’s Maurice Jones. Scoring 29 points, you’d figure he went crazy from three, but he only attempted 3 threes, making 2. He was 10 of 20 from the floor and 7 of 10 from the line. 5 assists. 2 turnovers.

USC has no depth though. Only 7 players played. Vucevic (40 minutes), Stepheson (40 minutes), Jones (40 minutes) Bryce Jones (38 minutes) will certainly wear down with that kind of workload.
