Basketball: 20 Questions with Emerson Murray

Today we chat with . . .

Year: Freshman
Position: Guard
Height: 6-3
Hometown: Vancouver, B.C.

If you could play 1-on-1 with any player in basketball history, who would you choose? Kobe Bryant.

Hypothetically, I have $10 to bet on who wins. Tell me why I should consider you: Because I’m probably going to take it a lot more seriously than Kobe Bryant playing me.

What’s your basketball career highlight so far? Getting to have a workout with Jason Kidd.

Who’s the best dunker on the Cal team? Richard Solomon.

What’s the most consecutive free throws you’ve ever made? I hit 59 with my dad out on the driveway. I was 16. We’d shoot until we miss. I at least wanted to get to 60.

Give me one word that describes coach Mike Montgomery: Intelligent.

When you’re not playing, do you prefer to watch college basketball or the NBA? College basketball is really growing on me know because I’m here. I was a big NBA fan, a Lakers fan.

When you were younger, other than basketball, what was your favorite sport to play? I did a lot of track just because my dad was a track athlete and I was always around a lot of track athletes. I’ve never played ice hockey in my life.

In one word, describe how good you were at that sport: Mediocre.

Aside from you, who is the best athlete in your family? My older brother Leo definitely is a better athlete than I am. He did track. He was (Canada’s) top long jumper for his age from 15 to 18. He jumped 7.20 meters (23 feet, 7 1/2 inches).

Before basketball, what did you first want to be when you grew up?  When I was a real little kid I wanted to be an inventor. I wanted to invent something to make something to make people fly.

Greatest vacation you’ve ever taken?  Where did you go?  Who was along? I went to Jamaica in fifth grade with my family. I got to to see where my dad grew up. He’s from Kingston. I got to see the nice weather, the nice people, the country.

What’s your favorite place to eat on or near campus? I eat a lot at Chipotle. I was against Chipotle when I got here. I kind of got sucked into it.

Favorite Cal class? African American studies. It’s so in-depth, so knowledgeable. It was the first class I can really say I loved going to.

The best movie you’ve ever seen? My favorite movie is Stepbrothers. I’m a big Will Farrell fan.

The worst? Dance Flick. It was a parody of dance movies. I left after 15 minutes.

Your favorite TV show? I was a big fan of Martin.

Your favorite website? Probably NBA.com. I’m always on NBA.com.

Are you on Facebook or Twitter or both? Just Facebook. I’m not a big Twitter fan. I don’t know if I understand it yet.

What was the last book you read that wasn’t assigned? I read the biography of Allen Iverson. That was real interesting, about his life and what you have to go through to make the NBA.

Jeff- I really enjoy reading these. It is nice to get a little of the players personalities off the court. It helps humanize them a bit, and perhaps helps us as fans to be a bit more patient when we see basketball at the level of the 1st half vs. Notre Dame and the 2nd half vs. BC. Double ouch.

    Keep these up, they’re great!

A good question that should have been asked, as it is obvious and not over the line, is whether Emerson is frustrated with his playing time so far. Also, he should have been asked what his coach thinks he needs to improve in and whether he thinks there is any other part of his game that particularly needs improvement. I guess the point is that some of the questions need to be more directed to how he feels about his game so far.

I love these posts. The interviews are by far the funnest to read. Getting to see a little bit of who these kids are outside of basketball makes watching them play even more fun. Nice job Jeff.

I particularly pay close attention to the best place to eat question. Can’t believe there’s a Chipotle on campus. We’ve sold out!!! : )

  • Dan

More surprising is how many of these BB players choose Chipotle. It’s not bad, but c’mon, in Berkeley, this is their favorite?

  • ondal

I am now going to Chipotle

  • CalTeddy

100% agree with Dan. Come on, you’ve got Gordo’s, Hi-Tek, even La Burrita. The Berkeley of my youth is dying.

  • Juancho

Man, I remember the wet burrito from la burrita. One of the perfect meals to accompany a pretty strong buzz.

  • Denver

They like Chipotle because their strength coach (Coach Mike Blasquez) highly recommends their burrito bowls.
