Bearterritory.net , via BuffStampede.com,  is reporting that Cal offensive line coach Steve Marshall is leaving the Bears to become the OL coach at Colorado. Story not confirmed by either school. Will keep you posted.

Probably good news for both Cal and for Marshall. Change of direction was obviously needed. This is obviosuly an absolutely crucial hire for us to get right.

  • Juancho

Maybe Michalzek is interested in coaching the Raiders AND Cal ?

  • milo

Damn, it was obvious to everyone. Nice to see JTed move quickly. Hate to say it but Daft, the WR coach, also needs to go.

  • Patrick

    Today is a good day.

  • abe

    Milo,

nice to see someone not blind. i have been asking for Daft’s head for quite some time now. i dont think there is any position on this team, save perhaps the OLine, that has been devastated by lack of progress as the WR position. If you all can recall Nyan Boateng couldn’t hide his frustration about the apparent lack of progress among the receivers late into the season in ’08. that is actually when i looked up who was coaching the position and came away unimpressed to say the least. Daft needs to go.

It’s either staying with a team on a downward projectory or it’s going to a team that has no where to go but up. He chose well.

It’s either staying with a team on a downward slide or it’s going to a team that has no where to go but up. He chose well.

  • Bobby

Is it like staying with a team that is going south or going to a team that has nowhere to go but up?

    Trajectory.

Go bears! Let’s get a young guy to come in and nail some recruits a la Tosh

  • MikeD

a good step, happy to hear that there is change going on and that Marshall has landed on his feet in CO. Now to see who steps in, hopefully it’s a *big* step up

  • MikeD

ugh, got ahead of myself, unconfirmed story. well, we all can wish…

  • The Bug

Kevin Daft is a good coach. Other than Marvin’s drops, o though he did okay with a pretty bare cupboard and horrible QB play that rarely hit near receivers. Blame QB coach not Daft.

  • Marinbear

I agree with Abe and Milo. The WR unit has been terrible, and this goes way beyond Marivin’s drops, or the overall talent level. They are not getting open, fighting for the ball, or making plays. Not sure if this is all Daft’s fault, but something needs to change. Just about every WR underperfored, over the last few years, and there never seems to be a go to guy.
Like the QB’s, some look promising as Freshman, then go backwards. I hope K.Allen is not next in this line. At the beginning of the season, I thought Marvin would emerge as the guy. He never really did. Seems like the coaches are in love with Jeremy Ross.

  • Picard

@morenc – “projectory”? Tell us again how much you paid for that U$C education.

  • BlueNGold

    Picard-

moron never attended the u of sleazy cheaters. It just “lives”, if you can call it that, vicariously through its NFL factory disguised as a football program.

  • RandUmBear

    Dear Tedford,

Do what you can to hire Coach Michalzek. He’s a proven product. If you hired him, I’d have more hope for the program.

  • Larry

When Cable gets fired from the Raiders after this season, Michalchek should be available.

As for Marshall, it’s no surprise he left after two seasons, that’s his M.O. just look at his resume, 1-2 years at a place and gone.

  • milo

Larry, if da Raiders finish over .500…Cable will likely stay. However you make a really good point about Michalzcik possibly coming back to Cal. He left for UW as OC…but he took the Raider job like 3 weeks later so his family could stay in NorCal, so he might be open to the idea coming back to Cal.

Unfortunately for Michalzcik, he’s one of those coaches that’s very, very good as a position coach and moving up to OC isn’t/wasn’t as easy as it looks. OTOH, making a decent salary in NorCal has rewards…like life is good. New facilities, easy commute can’t hurt however.

  • Dan

Milo- Cable is gone. When he played Gradkowski in the loss to the Dolphins, probably costing da Raiduhs (will win) a chance at the playoffs, he sealed his fate with Mr. Davis.

Michalzcik back at Cal would be a huge win for Tedford. If he doesn’t come back, take that as a huge red flag and statement against Tedford. Tedford should do whatever it takes, give him $$ from his $2.8M, give him a co-OC title, a asst. HC title- whatever. Should be interesting to see what happens.

  • rollonyoubears111

Ludwig should go…Tedford should pick up QB and OC duty again if we are to see any progress. The D needs help in the secondary, and special teams still needs a lot of help.

  • milo

Dad and Larry…da Raiders lost and it looks like a sub-.500 season and Cable might be gone. So maybe Michalzcik will be available…if he wants to come back.

  • Will

Gosh, I leave this blog for awhile thanks to a BigLaw job, and moren is STILL posting? What is this, 6 years and counting? This is kind of sad…
