Basketball: 20 Questions with Jorge Gutierrez

Today, a visit with . . .

Position: Guard
Height: 6-3
Hometown: Chihuahua, Mexico

If you could play 1-on-1 with any player in basketball history, who would you choose? I think I’d like to play against Steve Nash. I just really like his game. I like how he controls the ball and he sees all the floor. It’s crazy.

Hypothetically, I have $10 to bet on who wins. Tell me why I should consider you: Because I would hit him, play physical. I don’t think he likes that.

What’s your basketball career highlight so far? Just winning the Pac-10. That’s the thing I’ll remember the rest of my life. Playing with Jerome Randle, Theo Robertson, Patrick (Christopher), Jamal (Boykin). That’s something you don’t forget.

Who’s the best dunker on the Cal team? Richard (Solomon). He dunks almost everything.

What’s the most consecutive free throws you’ve ever made? When I was working out in Denver, I made 45 in a row. But it was just practice.

Give me one word that describes coach Mike Montgomery: Smart

When you’re not playing, do you prefer to watch college basketball or the NBA? I prefer college. It’s more competitive.

When you were younger, other than basketball, what was your favorite sport to play? I played baseball, soccer, handball. My favorite was baseball. I played first base.

In one word, describe how good you were at that sport: Decent.

Aside from you, who is the best athlete in your family? My dad used to be pretty athletic, but he gained a little bit of weight. He used to play basketball, baseball, soccer, everything. He has huge calves.

Before basketball, what did you first want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a doctor. I always told my mom and my dad that I wanted to be a doctor.

Greatest vacation you’ve ever taken?  Where did you go?  Who was along? I remember going camping with my family up in the mountains of Chihuahua. It was crazy because it doesn’t really snow up there, but that time it snowed. It was Christmas time. We weren’t expecting the snow. That was probably the first time I saw snow. It was really fun. We started off in a tent, then we had to move to some school. We actually slept in a classroom.

What’s your favorite place to eat on or near campus? I like this place down University. It’s this Mexican place — I don’t remember the name of it, but it’s a pretty good Mexican place.

Favorite Cal class? College writing. It wasn’t fun because it’s one of the toughest classes here. I liked it and I got a B.

What Cal athlete you’ve met who is not on the men’s basketball team has impressed you? Softball. I’m always impressed with what the girls can do. My girlfriend, Frani Echavarria, is a softball player. She has an arm, man. She plays outfield. One time she caught a ball in the middle of the field and she threw a girl out at third.

The best movie you’ve ever seen? I don’t watch many movies.

Your favorite TV show? We used to watch Jersey Show. It’s pretty funny.

Your favorite website? I guess everybody goes to YouTube.

Are you on Facebook or Twitter or both? I don’t have any of that. I don’t like drama. I stay away from that stuff.

What was the last book you read that wasn’t assigned? I have not read a book that is not assigned for a while.

    is why I love Jorge

  • David

Yup, Steve Nash doesn’t like to get hit…lol

“College Writing” is the hardest class at Cal? I think the guys in the astrophysics department would beg to differ.

  • charlie

Funny kid – I think the language barrier sometimes makes him say things, or perhaps even understand things, differently than intended.

When all is said and don, Jorge will go down as one of my favorite Cal basketball players of all time.

  • milo

The kid has heart, cuz he’s a Golden Bear! I see him easily playing in the Spain and Euro pro league.

  • jeh

I agree with Charlie. I have been to all of the home games since 1978, and love watching Jorge probably more than anyone, I guess, because of his heart.

His soft-spokenness off the court is also endearing, particularly when contrasted with his fearless, brave sacrifice of his whole being on the court.

  • Robert Towne

Jorge says that Richard Solomon “dunks everything”. I’d like to see that. He doesn’t yet do it in games, though I think he may. He needs to get to the rim better and put it AWAY. I’m sure he will. He’s just a young guy.

But this thread is about Jorge. Love Jorge! Good to see that his family can see him at Arizona. That must be nice for him.

I see that he has a girlfriend. Ah, it all makes sense now. He must’ve had a fight with her and that’s why his head wasn’t in the Hartford game.

Minor correction: astrophysics is in the Physics department at Cal. It’s not a department on its own.

As for “College Writing” being hard, English 1A & B were some of the harder classes at Cal for me(and yes, I’ve taken graduate astrophysics!)
