Football: Cal lands JC running back
By Jonathan Okanes

The Bears have received an oral commitment from Laney College running back C.J. Anderson. This gives the Bears four running backs in their 2011 class. With returners Isi Sofele, Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson, Dasarte Yarnway and Trajuan Briggs alrleady in the mix, Cal certainly has a huge logjam at tailback.
According to rivals.com, Anderson is a three-star prospect who also had offers from Memphis, Nevada, Washington State, New Mexico State and San Jose State. Scout.com has Anderson as a two-star prospect.

I’m not sure all four RB recruits in the 2011 class will end up playing RB for Cal. Ervin, out ot Texas, could end up playing in the secondary.
C.J. Anderson will be a junior – effectively replacing the departure of upper classman Vereen.
Cal has taken 2 H.S. RB before in the same class: Sofele and Yarnway in 2009 and Best and Vereen in 2006. In both instances, one RB played, the other “blue” shirted; the following year Cal only took 1 Highschool RB.
Lasco and Bigelow will be freshman. One will likely blue-shirt. [BTW Lasco has the build of a Saftey...]

At the NFL Pro Bowl today, former Cal center Alex Mack and now Cleveland Browns All-Pro center scored a touchdown after receiving the second of two laterals after a pass play. Great to watch Mack cause a defensive player bounce off of Mack during an unsuccessful tackle attempt. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Video-Crazy-AFC-lateral-stuns-apathetic-NFC-tea?urn=nfl-314461

Uh Oh:
Blue Shirt is the proper term at Cal for what is known as “redshirting” in other schools. Of course, if the player wore a red shirt he’d have to take it off.

Take off that red shirt.

perfect–only guy who took off because he KNEW what a couple of laterals could do

msg and galas are back again, right? when both of those guys played, we were fine last year. tedfurd kept moving msg to different positions all season, however, and insisted on playing tompek-gaurnero over and over again, even though he wasn’t as talented. i think he’s moved on though, so we should be fine. that was quite frustrating, though.

not sure the team can wait that long.

I’m pretty sure Ervin is coming in as a DB. Briggs and Bigelow are coming off injuries, so they may not be ready to go right away.

we still have 2 game slots to fill this season. any word on who we might play?

“blueshirt” = “redshirt”
…since Cal fans detest the color red, we don’t say a player “redshirts” – i.e. doesn’t play for a year in order to learn the play book, become stronger, etc – but rather “blueshirts”.

just thinking about the massive storm in the midwest, it might behoove tedford to text any bubble recruits with the reminder “it’s sunny out here in california.”
