Football: Cal to play Presbyterian College

By Jeff Faraudo
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 at 6:27 pm in Football, Scheduling.

With Jonathan taking some well-deserved vacation, here’s some news you will want:

Cal will play a non-conference football game Sept. 17 at AT&T Park against Presbyterian College, an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision team from Clinton, S.C.

The Golden Bears have not announced the game yet, but Presbyterian posted it on its website.

The Blue Hose were 2-9 last season, including 1-5 in the Big South Conference. They played two games against Football Bowl Championship teams last season, losing 53-13 at Wake Forest and 58-21 at Clemson.

“Cal will be a great trip for us. Coach (Jeff) Tedford is doing great things out there and it’ll be a fun game and a great experience for our guys,” Presbyterian coach Harold Nichols said on gobluehose.com.

Cal, which will play its home games in San Francisco next season while Memorial Stadium undergoes renovation, still has a Sept. 10 opening on its non-conference schedule.

gobluehose.com kind of sounds like a pay-for-content site.

  2. jabes Says:

    “D”

  3. milo Says:

Blue hose? I expect that from the Catholics but not the Presbos.

  4. dball Says:

All part of the plan to continue our visibility among future recruits in the NC/SC area….though this one will likely not be on tv on the east coast.

  5. Bob49 Says:

When one out of ten people have heard of Presbyterian College (at least those on the West Coast), you know this game is a joke. At least UC Davis had a consistently good record and was well known out here. This looks like Cal has scheduled a JC school. I know you want a few “gimmes” on the schedule, but this is dropping down way too low in order to get a “W.”

  6. BlakeStreetBear Says:

WTF!? I’d rather the bears lose against a good team.

  7. Dan Says:

Weak and pointless. I agree w/ Bob49 and BlakeStretBear.

  8. Pappy's Boy Says:

Nice – glad the University of California lost 100 years of tradition and the baseball program was cut so The Bears could play Presbyterian College in front of 12,000 at Pac Bell/At&T. Sandy, I realize the numbers were against you, and the Monty hire will define your legacy, but your Notre Dame background did not prepare you for this. The Irish never had to deal with the budget cuts you have to deal with now, as it’s two different animals, and you are in so far over your head.

Hopefully.. we won’t further embarrass ourselves.. win or lose..

  10. pompusone2000 Says:

2-9 was an improvement over the previous year of 0-9. Blue Hose on the upswing!

  11. rollonubears Says:

This is what happens when you wait until february to fill a hole in your schedule. Pretty sad, but it will be a nice warmup for whatever QB we decide to go with. It’s still Cal football, no matter who we’re playing.

  12. covinared Says:

I don’t see it as any lower in prestige than Sac St. Portland St. or UC Davis.

  13. Yoda Says:

I think the problem was basically that no one else had an opening. Embarrassing though.

  14. covinared Says:

    or Eastern Washington…

  15. Calduke Says:

Wake Forest and Clemson scheduled them last year.

  16. Calduke Says:

I’m presbyterian. I have mixed emotions where to sit during this game.

Excuse my ignorance, but, what is a Blue Hose?

  17. covinared Says:

its what they used to kill catholics back in the good old days.

  18. Marinbear Says:

What a Joke. Yet another game that teaches the team how not to play 4 quarters of football.
    Disgusting.

  19. milo Says:

It’s not only no one can schedule a game this late but also the uncertainty of playing at ATT caused this. The only thing I’m bummed about is that this will be one of the games in the season ticket package. On the plus side, beer will be served.

  20. rollonubears Says:

Beer makes Cal sports so much better. It’s only this year. It’s only one game. Next year should be the start of something incredible.

  21. 707 Bear Says:

    Milo,

Quick note: beer only served on club level and suites

  22. JohnnyCalifornia Says:

I surprised that so many people are upset about this. Cal didn’t have a lot of options. It’s the ATT year and the first year of the new conference alignment. It’s as good as Sac State or Eastern Washington. Actually, better because they have a funny name.

  23. 707 Bear Says:

    the official alcohol policy:

Alcohol will only be available to patrons with tickets in private suites or the Club Level of AT&T Park (Sections 202-234), a restricted seating level accessible only by patrons with a ticket in those sections. All beverages will be served by professionally trained alcohol vendors and servers, ensuring the highest level of monitoring and that all applicable laws are strictly followed.

My handout says the cheapest club level seat at $700 for the season.

So much for the little guy.

    No justice, no peace!

  24. Calduke Says:

Please – no beer drinking during the Presbyterian game.
Goodness guys – show a little respect for the visitors.

  25. Larry Says:

    Is this a joke?

  26. Waddy Says:

I thought April Fools was on April 1st. Huh.
Memo to Johnny California: The Blue Hose have 1200 students. This is NOT the same as Sac State or Eastern Washington. Not even close.

  27. milo Says:

About the beer on club level…bupkis. I guess it’s BYOB like Memorial. :) Not the same however.

Anyone going to the Open House at ATT this Sat to check out seats? I’m thinking about it…although at my level I think it’s nose bleed.

  28. 707 Bear Says:

    Milo,

Open House next week, 26th…maybe they’ll serve beer

  29. Larry Says:

I’m going to pimp slap one of those Blue Hoes! ;)

  30. Calduke Says:

The Bears may need this game after Fresno State.
