Football: Thursday night update

No real huge news tonight. A few nuggets:

  • Tight end Spencer Ladner was on crutches. Jeff Tedford said he tweaked his knee and was going to get it checked out Friday morning.
  • Tedford said right now Isi Sofele’s backups at tailback would be Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson and Mike Manuel, but once again reiterated that the incoming freshmen will get a long, hard look in the fall. He’s mostly talking about Brendan Bigelow and Daniel Lasco. “It would be those two guys right now, but we have some other guys,” Tedford said. “We have some guys coming in who are very talented.”
  • When asked if the quarterback competition could be settled by the end of spring practice on April 30, Tedford said “it’s possible.” But he also said one of the candidates would have to significantly separate himself. It still sounds like it will last into fall camp.
  • Tedford said there are some positives from having to leave campus for spring practices. “Especially with the year we’re getting ready to have (with home games at AT&T Park), it’s like going on the road every week,” he said. “You have to focus no matter where you are. They learn to get used to it and deal with it. It kind of teaches you to focus on the job at hand no matter where you are.”
  • It doesn’t sound like transfer Matt Williams is ready to make an impact on the offensive line this season, at least at this point. Williams is a native of England who didn’t start playing football until age 15.
  • “Matt Williams is learning about the speed of the game,” Tedford said. “He’s an attention-to-detail guy. He really wants to get it done. As of right now, it will take awhile.”

Perhaps, just perhaps there is another Kyle Boller in the wings. JT made a star out of him.

  • Bobby

Under-performing highly drafted QBs? Leinart (57.1% comp., 14 TDs, 20 INTs) and Sanchez (54% comp., 29 TDs, 33 INTs) have comparable ratios to Boller (56% comp., 48 TDs, 51 INTs).

In relevant news, it sounds like Maynard’s learning curve is trending upwards. Good to hear

  • Boaltblue

The entire USC team loaded with 4 and 5 star players have been underperforming in recent years. When was USC’s last National Championship (excluding the one that was taken away)?

  • It sounds like Mansion as Tedford just uses the seniority system. That is killing us as our best players are seldom in the game. The learning the system is bull.Change the system if it takes that long.Players win games not systems. How long will he keep Kline on the bench.Other schools put the best out there not the oldest.

  • Calduke

I hope there is another Kyle Boller in the wings.
He was an outstanding senior QB and let’s hope the current senior has a similiar year.

  • Uh Huh!

Please, just don’t talk to the Moron.

  • Larry

“Today we conclude the draft bust series, bringing you the biggest bust the Cardinals have had since 1990. I would argue that he is probably the biggest bust in team history. Since it is still part of recent history, it also stings the most”.

“The biggest draft bust is none other than quarterback Matt Leinart”.

You are right, U$C is #1!

“Change the system if it takes that long. Players win games not systems.”

    Hear, hear.

I hope some Cal fans can check out the open practice today at Valley Christian H.S. in San Jose (1-3:30). I went to the first 2 open practices & have came away pretty happy with the QB play, especially the play of Bridgford & Mansion. It looks like Tedford has unleased the D to test his QBs under “live fire” conditions. The D is taking no prisoners & the QBs are making better & better decisions under real game stress situations. A much better O is on the horizon, Cal fans.

  • Big D

    I hope you are right.

When is the open practice at San Ramon Valley High?
