Basketball: Off-season updates

A few tidbits on the Bears’ basketball team:

— Assistant coach Gregg Gottilieb and director of operations John Montgomery have swapped positions. Gottlieb will take over operations and Montgomery will be on the court assisting Mike Montgomery and assistants Jay John and Travis DeCuire for the first time.

Word is Mike Montgomery simply wanted to give his son the opportunity to get some experience as an assistant. Gottlieb is entering his fifth season at Cal, the fourth since Montgomery replaced Ben Braun.

— The Bears began limited official practices on Tuesday in preparation for their August 12-22 trip to Northern Europe. Neither Allen Crabbe nor Alex Rossi was available, but both should be on the floor soon. Crabbe is recovering from a  broken nose suffered at the USA U19 tryouts and is expected to wear a protective mask for the short term. Rossi, who missed all of last season with a groin pull and hernia, is close to full recovery, Cal reports. Sophomore Emerson Murray, who had offseason foot surgery to remove a plate, isn’t ready to practice but likely will be OK’d for the Euro trip.

— Dick Vitale has Cal at No. 35 in his preseason Top-40 rankings on ESPN.com. Arizona checks in at No. 17, UCLA at No. 29. Vitale hasn’t unveiled his top-10 yet.

Thanks for the update, Jeff. John Montgomery tweeted yesterday that “Crabbe, Rossi and Murray all coming off spring surgeries were all on the floor playing hard,” which is nice to hear.
Do you know if there will be any opportunity to watch streaming video or highlights of the European tour games? Jonesin’ to see the team…
On another note, it sounds like John has been hitting the recruiting trails hard–any insight on what kind of impact that’s having, if any? Seems like having a young, energetic guy who can also credibly tell recruits that he has the head man’s ear could be a pretty effective tool. Would be nice if he could develop into an impact recruiter, a la Tosh on the football side–might be something to keep an eye on.

Yeah, there does seem to be some inconsistency between John Monty’s tweet and Faraudo’s update regarding the status of Crabbe, Rossi, and Murray.

Bak is also still in Africa with no projected date he’s going to be allowed to return.

Look forward to hearing about Kravish and Behrens.

  • Uh Huh!

Why don’t you tweet to John Monty about the games in Europe and report back to us. I would love that, too!

  • Uh Huh!

Why did you use the word “allowed” to return?
As I understood it, he’s simply visiting family for the first time in a long time and will get back here when that’s over with…

Just referring to JF’s previous update where he said Bak was dealing with passport issues. I assume he had planned to be back in Berkeley for the start of practice.

What is John Montgomery’s twitter account?
    Can’t find it.
Excited to hear about their trip over there.
Will be fun to follow this team all year!
