Basketball: Norwegian national team tops Bears

Handcuffed by a zone defense that limited them to 1 for 14 shooting from the 3-point arc, the Bears lost 69-64 to the Norwegian national team Wednesday at Oslo, Norway. Cal is now 2-1 on its exhibition tour of northern Europe.

The Bears led 24-12 at the end of the first quarter, then were outscored 57-40 the rest of the game. The hosts led 37-36 by halftime and extended the margin to 56-49 entering the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Allen Crabbe, who averaged 21 points in Cal’s two wins in Sweden, was held to five shots and had seven points to go with six rebounds.

Sophomore Richard Solomon led the Bears with 15 points and six rebounds, sophomore Justin Cobbs scored 13 and senior Harper Kamp had 12 points in his most extensive action of the trip. Kamp played very little in the first two games because of a sore knee.

Junior Brandon Smith contributed nine points and junior Robert Thurman had six points and five rebounds.

Senior all-conference guard Jorge Gutierrez, apparently still hampered by an ankle sprain he suffered last week during a scrimmage in Berkeley, missed his third straight game on the trip.

The Bears have two days off before playing Saturday and Sunday against the Danish national team in Copenhagen, Denmark.

no size again this year means we gotta be able to shoot the 3 ball or teams are gonna go zone on us all season.

  • Kevin Thomas

    No size?

    Up front:

    Solomon 6-10
    Thurman 6-10
    Kravish 6-9
    Bak 6-9
    Kamp 6-8
    Behrens 6-8

    Shooting Guards:

    Crabbe 6-6
    Rossi 6-6
    Powers 6-7
    Jorge 6-4

How much more size do you need?

  • H8sRed

Good point, Kevin, but if Jorge is 6-4, I’m a 7-footer.

Cal has some height/length (improvement from last year) but it’s not so great in lane-clogging bulk and muscle dept.

  • DaveintheHills

If Thurman continues to show extensive improvement compared to last year, we’ll be alright.

I don’t know about the level of the Norwegian National team, one has to assume they are somewhat decent. But 3rd game in 4 days half-way across the globe, missing their best player, and losing by 5? No complaints. This experience is going to pay huge dividends come the season.

I cannot wait for the season to begin! This is the first time in a long time where I am anticipating basketball season more than football season. I love the Bears, but last year’s football season was torture, while the basketball team was an absolute joy to watch the majority of the time. We are so lucky to have Monty, I hope he stays at Cal for at least 10 more years. We will hang more banners in Haas if that is the case. Also, should Cal retire Jorge’s jersey after this season? Claro que si!! Viva Jorge! Y viva los Osos de Oro!
