Football: Camporeale quotables

Here’s more of what linebacker Dan Camporeale had to say Saturday after winning a starting job:

On his expectations going into camp:

“I didn’t really have any expectations going in. I just knew if I went out there and kept trying, kept working, like I’ve been doing every since I’ve been here, I was going to get my opportunity. I finally got it.”

On the competition with Ryan Davis, Cecil Whiteside and Chris McCain:

“It was just a great competition between all of us. We all pushed each other.”

On whether Mychal Kendricks’ move inside gave him more of an opportunity:

“I felt like the opportunity was there. It was just up to me to prove myself and make sure I knew my stuff and go out there and work on my technique every day and prove that I can see some playing time this year.”

On whether he was confident going in he could win the starting job:

“It was all based on me going out there and playing like I know I can. I know I can play at this level. All it took was me going and proving it to the coaches, going out everyday and proving to my teammates that I deserve to be out there.”

On whether he had a chip on his shoulder since he is a walk-on:

“I wasn’t on scholarship but I had every opportunity to play that a scholarship player has. They always told us the best players are going to play. The players that do their job, do what they have to do are going to play whether you have a scholarship or not.”

On how he has gotten in shape over the years:

“When I was a freshman, I was pretty much the same weight, but I was pretty pudgy. Coach Blasquez really has us working. My strength increased, my size increased, it’s been good.”

On making his first start in front of family and friends:

“It’s going to be exciting. I can’t wait. I have so much support from all my family and friends. It’s been a long road and they have supported me through the whole thing and I couldn’t do it without them.”

I love to hear jobs won like this because it shows no matter the name on your back if you practice well you will get a shot to prove yourself in a game.
Now it’s up to all the guys that have earned playing time to step up and win on Saturdays.
Does not matter if you are a walk on or a top national recruit when the whistle blows, what matters then is if you can win each play, each series, each game.
Fired up to start seeing what the entire 2011 Bears have got.
