A couple of nuggets from Jeff Tedford after today’s practice:
- TE Spencer Ladner had another surgery Tuesday to clean up his knee and will be out another three weeks. Ladner originally injured it during spring practice and had surgery. Tedford said it didn’t heal quite properly and the clean-up procedure was necessary.
- WRs Kaelin Clay and Maurice Harris will both be available Saturday. Harris is a mild surprise because just a few days ago Tedford didn’t sound confident he would be ready for the opener. Since both players missed significant time, they likely enter this game pretty far down on the depth chart. Marvin Jones, Keenan Allen, Michael Calvin and Coleman Edmond go in as the Bears’ top four receivers. Clay, Harris and walk-on freshman Bryce McGovern make up the next group on the depth chart.
- Josh Hill is Cal’s nickelback. Redshirt freshman Michael Coley and true freshman Avery Walls each had strong camps but Hill will be the fifth DB when the Bears go to the nickel. And you can expect Cal to play a lot of nickel this season with many Pac-12 teams spreading the field these days.
