Basketball: Athlon picks Cal as possible surprise

The editors of Athlon Sports were asked to pick a potential surprise team in 2011-12, and the Bears were one of three names that surfaced.

    that’s nice, but i thought cal was already a title contender.

    Alas, there are no surprises with this Cal team this year. The Vegas oddsmakers aren’t surprised either, making Cal a 24 point dog in the Oregon game Thursday. Has Cal ever been a 24-point dog in the Tedford era?

    If we need any further proof that California football is sliding deeper into irrelvancy, did anyone notice that Washington State went into Colorado and whipped the Buffs over the weeekend, and didn’t need overtime to accomplish it? I am trying to get my arms around the concept that Cal is Washington State right now in terms of talent and achievement.

    The only difference is that Washington State is on its way up the ladder, and Cal is slowly sliding down, having not done anything truly significant since the road win at Autzin in 2007.

    Nice find JF. I like this chunk;

    “In two years, Montgomery is 23–13 in league games. The guy is a proven winner, and he figures to have the ’11-12 Golden Bears back in the NCAA Tournament after a one-year hiatus.”

    Given what Cal fans have to live through this football season, basketball can’t come fast enough. Add in the fact it JUST kills Furd fans to watch Monty roll is an added bonus.

    Go Bears!

    Steve, hold off on an assessment until Friday. I think we can cover that spread no problem, and have a chance to win. I also think we can beat u$c. We probably lose thursday, but I’ll be shocked if it’s by 24 points. this is a different team this year.

    So, Steve, the win on the road against a heavily favored Stanfurd two years ago wasn’t “significant?”

  • Eric

    I usually disagree with H8sRed because I do agree Tedford is definitely not the way forward, but WSU needed a late 4th quarter bomb to win after being down virtually the entire game. Not entirely sure that the two games are comparable, notwithstanding the fact that Cal needed overtime to win.

    Uh, Steve, the linked article is about the BASKETBALL team.

    By the way, WSU didn’t “whip” Colorado. The Cougars pulled ahead on a 63-yard TD pass with 1:10 left in the game.
