I think it is the sheer volume or size of the playbook, including the reads and checks, not the complexity of the offense that is overwhelming. The offense is not complex when many fans (and opposing coaches) can look at the down, the clock, the formation, and what players we have on the field, and then tell you exactly what play Cal will run.

In terms of why most QB’s are not successful in Tedford’s system was Riley’s statement that once he understood or got comfortable with the system, he didn’t have any problems with it. Many fans would say Riley had problems with it for all 4 years. He was a better a QB when he was a freshman, and knew very little about Tedford’s system.
