Basketball: Smith, Bruins win exhibition

Joshua Smith began his sophomore season with a 26-point, 7-rebound, 3-blocked shot performance, leading UCLA to a narrow 80-72 exhibition win over Cal State San Bernardino at Ontario’s Citizens Business Bank Arena. Smith, at 6-foot-10, 315 pounds, faced a Coyotes starting lineup with no one taller than 6-7.

Reeves Nelson added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the  Bruins. Lazeric Jones and Travis Wear each scored 10.

Elsewhere . . .

– Oakland product and freshman guard Jabari Brown had 16 points and 11 rebounds, leading Oregon to a 100-58 route of Lewis and Clark in an exhibition. Transfers Olu Ashaolu (Louisiana Tech) and Tony Woods (Wake Forest) added 16 and 13 points, respectively, meaning that three newcomers combined for 45 points. The Ducks will be better this season. 

In recruiting news . . .

– Ben Carter, a 6-8, 220-pound forward from Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas, has chosen Oregon over UNLV and Utah, according to Carter is the nation’s No. 129 overall prospect in the Rivals rankings. The Ducks also have landed Damyean Dotson, a wing from Yates HS in Houston, according to
